I am well aware of U.S. bases in Turkey whose agreements have been made since 1954 as a counter to Soviet Union (present day Russia). It is a NATO ally with a strategic partnership with U.S.
This doesn’t mean Türkiye cannot act with its own self interest or have independent foreign policy that conflicts with other NATO members. Turkey maintains relations with both Iran and Russia because it has a balancing foreign policy which conflicts with other NATO states. They purchased s-400 defense system despite outrage by other NATO states. It has territorial disputes with both Cyprus and Greece. It holds control over Northern Cyprus.
