Their reasoning was that building an air force was out of the reach for them. A jet fighter has too many hi-tech components that is impossible to master for Iran without foreign help. And the US would still gain air superiority anyway. So, they decided to bet their money on missiles.
I have always been against that tactic, but it is what it is.

RAF shoots down 14 drones in single night in Iraq - as UK considers options on Hormuz
The RAF shot down more than a dozen drones in Iraq last night, UK defence officials have said.
Fourteen one-way attack drones were destroyed by a regiment in the city of Erbil, the highest number it has shot down in a single night so far.
On the Strait of Hormuz, the officials said the UK and France would lead a coalition of countries hoping to reopen the waterway.

I think it was the best option available to them to be honest. Some Russian Sukhois with long ranged missiles could have complimented it well

The "Civilian" areas that Iran has targeted (I'm not talking about a random unguided sub falling in a civilian area)have been housing for IAF Personnel and pilots or their Nuclear Scientists in the town of Demona.

Iran's biggest mistake was to trust the Russians.
In a way, I am glad that Khamenei was killed. He was responsible for too many bad decisions. I hope his son would be different.

total none sense , Ghalibaf outpowers him like 10 to 1 , he was also the wartime leader of IRGC during 12 war after Salami died (according Iranian state media sources)
Zolqadr is more like an puppet, with Zolqadr put in power IRGC only fortified its powergrip on Irans politics.
Many iranian news outlets including Mehrnews,tasnimnews and IRNA also are hinting that Ghalibaf is again "IRGC`s highest authority in the War" just like in the 12 Day War.
