PSL 2026: Teams allowed to submit two XIs and pick one after toss

Hyderabad Kingsmen captain Marnus Labuschagne warms up • PSL

Shaheen Shah Afridi and Marnus Labuschagne, captains of Lahore Qalandars and Hyderabad Kingsmen, walked out with two team sheets each for the toss ahead of the opening match of PSL 2026 and selected their final XIs based on which way the coin fell.

This was in accordance with a new regulation in the PSL playing conditions, which permits the captains to submit two team sheets to the match referee before the toss and finalise one of the submitted line-ups after the toss.

The clause 1.2.1 in the "Nomination and Replacement of Players" section reads: "Before the toss, each captain may submit two (2) different XI lineups in writing to the PSL Match Referee. Each lineup must include 11 players and a maximum of 4 substitute fielders (subject to Clause 1.2.5).

After the toss, each captain must finalise one of the two submitted lineups by signing the selected team sheet. Once the final lineup has been nominated, no player listed in the selected playing eleven may be changed before the start of the match without the consent of the opposing captain."

Tosses can play a significant role in this part of the world in night matches as a result of dew. The ball often gets wet and difficult to grip for the spinners, making them ineffective in the second innings. This change in the playing conditions is expected to provide a level playing field - a team batting first can add a fast bowler instead of a spinner while a team batting second can look to add depth to their batting.

There were no signs of dew in the first match of the season however because of the wind throughout the day and cloud cover.

Lahore Qalandars 199 for 6 (Fakhar 53, Haseebullah 40, Hassan 2-30) beat Hyderabad Kingsmen 130 (Labuschagne 26, Rauf 2-22, Ubaid 2-27, Raza 2-27) by 69 runs

Lahore Qalandars got their defence of the PSL title off to a flawless start, crushing debutants Hyderabad Kingsmen by 69 runs. In the tournament opener, the Qalandars turned in an all-round performance with both bat and ball.

A half-century from Fakhar Zaman and a number of supporting cameos helped propel them to 199, while a meek Kingsmen side were no match during the chase. Five different wicket-takers combined to skittle Marnus Labuschagne's side for 130 as the Qalandars burnished their formidable credentials.

After a pared down opening ceremony - in front of empty stands after the PSL decided against crowd involvement owing to a fuel conservation drive in the wake of the West Asia crisis - Shaheen Afridi opted to bat first.

They quickly set about exposing Kingsmen's modest bowling attack as Fakhar and Mohammad Naeem flew out of the blocks. The opening pair put on 84 in 50 balls before left-arm orthodox spinner Hassan Khan finally struck to draw first blood.

PSL matches proceed under restrictions reminiscent of the COVID era

LAHORE: This is similar to what happened during COVID times, when silence prevailed in the stadium. There were no chants or applause echoing around, and the surrounding roads were deserted. It still feels the same now except for one difference: people are no longer wearing masks.

If I ask you whether you would prefer no cricket at all or matches being played in empty stadiums, most people would probably say that at least being able to watch the game on TV from home is a blessing.

Only a few hundred people will be allowed to watch PSL matches live in the stadium. Each team and sponsor has been given one hospitality box, where owners, families, and sponsors will be present. Players’ families will also be able to watch the matches.

When I arrived at the stadium, the security arrangements looked similar to the past. However, the absence of smiling faces, children and youngsters holding national flags, was very noticeable. The media box was crowded with journalists.

I feel that once one or two matches are played, we will start focusing on players’ performances, and the discussion about the lack of crowd will fade somewhat.

At the stadium, I also met Wasim Akram and Mushtaq Ahmed. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz was the chief guest of the match. Undoubtedly, she has transformed Lahore. It felt as if we were in another country, wide roads, greenery, everything makes you say “Lahore is truly Lahore.” Those of us from Karachi can only feel envious when we see such development compared to our broken roads.
