Türkiye and the Balkans | News & Discussion

People forget that Yugoslavia was an experiment that went bad. It’s existence from 1918-1992 was an attempt to unify the different ethnic groups into one country. No one was happy, Tito held it together with an iron fist, silenced opposition and sent political enthusiasts to the infamous “goli otok,” an island where you were forced to chip stone all day with no purpose. Once Tito died, the serbs started overstepping their power allotment, the “brotherhood and unity” concept worked great when there was representation and power sharing amongst the republics and peoples. Once that started being undermined, it all went to hell. Even the nice Slovenians who are the most peaceful and mannered group took up arms, that says a lot. YU was similar to the Soviet Union, it was artificial with an imposed identity “Yugo” which literally translates to “southern.” Bosniaks were especially mistreated in YU, from systemic oppression to land confiscation.
Every communist federation in Eastern Europe was collapsing back then,it's no wonder. Everyone went back to nationalism.

Yes! It was an organic collapse, not necessarily orchestrated by the west, although they capitalized on it.

The Balkans is a priority for Türkiye not only from the political, economical and geographical perspectives, but also due to its historical, cultural and human ties with the region.

Being itself a Balkan country, Türkiye attaches great importance to its bilateral relations with the Balkan countries and maintains good relations with all of them. Our bilateral relations with these countries are based on the principles of respect for independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity and non-intervention into internal affairs and further developed on the basis of our historical ties and the principle of good neighborliness.

Etymology

The origin of the word Balkan is obscure; it may be related to Turkish bālk 'mud' (from Proto-Turkic *bal 'mud, clay; thick or gluey substance', cf. also Turkic bal 'honey'), and the Turkish suffix -an 'swampy forest' . It was used mainly during the time of the Ottoman Empire. In both Ottoman Turkish and modern Turkish, balkan means 'chain of wooded mountains

Turkiye's influence in the Western Balkans
Priority countries: Albania, Kosovo , Bosnia and Herzegovina

Turkiye's influence in the Western Balkans remains mainly based on
cultural and educational programmes offered to those countries with a large Muslim community and steadily developing trade.
Turkiye is not a Balkan country not even Greece is not a Balkan country. Both Turkiye and Greece are peripheral Balkan states with very small area comes in the sphere of Balkan region. Turkiye is mainly Asian country with 97% part in Asia and 3% Istanbul part in Europe....

Northern Greece has a quite Balkan culture, that doesn't mean it doesn't have the Greek culture, how can I explain it...Balkan culture or subculture is not what you probably have in mind as that "hardcore" Serbo-Romanian-Bulgarian-Gypsy thing you see on Youtube,it's often...I don't know how to describe this,it can encompass more nationalities and different cultures but have some common habits, behavior, cultural elements.

Turks, how do you explain this to someone from the subcontinent? 😋 I can't,I'm out of words.

Bulgarian-Romanian Gypsies are from the subcontinent too. He is right on that, these people share nothing with the amazing Balkan culture.
It's not quite on the level of singing to cobras like Indians do, but it's our Balkan culture and I love it. <3

Not sure why Indians care so much about Balkan region, like, I even see them commenting on Balkan related topics on X too. Bizarre.
