Saudi Arabia strategic Projects: news, discussions & updates

Earlier this week KSA recorded rainfall within a few days larger than the ANNUAL rainfall across the entire country. There were torrential floods, waterspouts etc.

Almost all of the 600 or so functional dams across KSA have been replenished fully and the acquirers have been refilled to a great degree.

Even desert areas have flourished immediately across the entire country.

Ukraine announces ‘mutually beneficial’ defence deal with Saudi Arabia

Ukraine says it has signed a defence agreement with Saudi Arabia as Gulf countries continue to come under Iranian attack amid the United States and Israel’s war on Iran.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who arrived in the kingdom on Thursday, said on X that an “important arrangement” had been made ahead of a meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

“It lays the foundation for future contracts, technological cooperation, and investment … Saudi Arabia also has capabilities that are of interest to Ukraine, and this cooperation can be mutually beneficial,” Zelenskyy posted on Friday.

Saudi Arabia’s state news agency said the two countries had signed a memorandum on defence procurement.

Riyadh has intercepted hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles from Iran since the US and Israel first struck Tehran on February 28. At least six missiles were intercepted on Friday, the Saudi defence ministry said.

Kyiv, which has long battled Russian drones, was quick to signal willingness to partner with Gulf countries after Iran began launching attacks on Gulf nations. Tehran insists it is targeting US assets in the region, but the assaults have upset relations as Gulf nations say civilians are being put at risk. So far, 25 people have died in Gulf countries, two as recently as Thursday in the United Arab Emirates.

Ukraine has become a major producer of cheap but efficient interceptor drones to counter Moscow’s waves of drone attacks that have intensified since late 2024.

“This winter alone, Russia launched over 19,000 drones into Ukraine, just to give some perspective on how much experience they do have in shooting down drones,” said Al Jazeera’s Audrey MacAlpine, reporting from Kyiv.

“We spoke to the air force, for example, which said that an increasing number of objects being shut down are shut down with interceptor drones. So there is a growing experience from Ukraine, which is probably one of the global leaders when it comes to drones, and that’s because they’ve been able to react and respond in real time to troubleshoot this technology,” she said.

On March 18, Zelenskyy said 201 anti-drone experts had been deployed to the Middle East to assist in the defence against Iranian attacks.

Yurii Cherevashenko, deputy commander of Ukraine’s Air Defence Cover Forces, told Al Jazeera the drones face unique challenges in the Middle East, such as sandstorms. But successful interception ultimately boils down to the pilot’s skills, he said.

In one of Russia’s largest wartime aerial attacks on Ukraine, it launched 948 drones within 24 hours on Tuesday, killing two people.

What are you blabbering about as usual? Ukraine has their own technology and 4 + years of direct experience shooting down 10.000's of drones. More than any other entity in the world. They have their own drone technology as well that they will now share with KSA. Go cry somewhere else.

They have already shared their tech - KSA unveiled several cheap suicide drones during the World Defense Show in Riyadh in February and they are already working alongside KSA while we speak. You don't sign such deals and alliances overnight. KSA and Ukraine have been cooperating closely for 15-10 years. In several key areas as well.

This is not the thread for this discussion but Ukraine has much more experience shooting down drones than Turkiye or anybody else. They have their own technology. They are not dependent on Turkiye or anybody else in this field.

Why is KSA not getting more credit in the media for reforesting/re-greening an area larger than Lebanon within just the span of a few years? Which or how many countries can even boost such a thing?

KSA now ranks 12th globally (out of almost 200 nations worldwide) in terms of tourism revenue. We are talking about a country that just 12 years ago was almost impossible for tourists to visit. Closely behind states such as North Korea in terms of difficulty in being granted a tourism visa.

Now imagine what KSA can achieve in the next 10-15 years when most of the giga and mega projects are finished. That is without mentioning Makkah and Madinah (Hajj and Umrah).

Also all this has occurred without KSA lifting the ban on alcohol anywhere - not even isolated island resorts. Look at Turkiye - who also have done a remarkable job developing their tourism sector from nothing - although much earlier. There prostitution is legal in comparison let alone alcohol - hence the huge hordes of drunk Russian/Ukrainian/Slavic and others tourists many resorts in Turkiye have been attracting for decades. Imagine if KSA followed such a model in just a few designated areas and only made it legal for foreign tourists.

Not something that I would personally support but it would no doubt atract a large number of tourists.

Remarkable changes in the past 15-20 years. Those are better numbers than many Western European nations. Take Denmark as an example. They had a youth unemployment rate of 11.7% in comparison in 2025.

UK had 16%.

Germany 6.8% in early 2026 - likely to grow this year.

Spain 24.75% in 2025.

Italy 17.6%.

USA 8.5% in March 2026.

China 16.1% in February 2026.

Turkiye 16-17% in February 2026.

Iran 20-22% in early 2026.

Pakistan 9.6-11.1% in 2025.

Another thing - the "highly oppressed" Saudi Arabian women are some of the most educated women globally with some of the highest number of STEM graduates anywhere in the world in terms of percentage. As well as having the by far highest growth in terms of women workforce participation and growth.

Look at how Saudi Arabian/Arab women in general are "fetishized" by the West and media.

I like this Peter guy as a Youtuber overall but even he is guilty of this.

It is almost as if every accomplishment by KSA is somehow silenced, ignored or focus is on some giga projects that have been halted, delayed or removed altogether - among 100's of others.

I personally don't care about the ignorance but it is "fascinating" to witness. Not that I ever had any other expectations of Western media and their framing of the ground realities.

This was scaled down ages ago - years ago. The original idea was frankly ridiculous and not realistic given that there was no modern technology to support such an idea in the first place. Very happy that that project (unrealistic) has been scaled down and focus has shifted on the realistic and beneficial parts of it and the other 100's mega and giga projects.

KSA is still the main infrastructure hub in the world along with China and a few select other countries:

And our leadership, very wisely, have publicly stated that they have no ego to halt, reform or even completely stop unrealistic or unfeasible (economically) projects. Which is how things should function in any sane society. I see this as a healthy sign.

It would be a 1 billion times bigger problem if MBS had such an ego that he would harm the country and economy in order not to lose "face" or scale down or halt unrealistic projects - something that every country has done or is doing and will be doing in the future.

I also believe that a lot of this - in particular in relation to The Line was to boost Saudi Arabian visibility and it had an effect as it was one of the most talked about infrastructure projects for years. Again better any publicity than none. I am sure that it somehow had a positive effect on KSA infrastructure projects, tourism, visibility and interest in general.

I also like the focus on immediate global events such as the upcoming World Cup, EXPO, infrastructure projects such as tourism projects, re-greening/reforestation (KSA just re-greened/reforested an area larger than Lebanon within the past few years), infrastructure projects such as the Riyadh Metro - world's most beautiful and largest driverless metro, Makkah and Madinah expansion projects etc.

Not many centuries ago, in fact less than 100 years ago, KSA was self-sufficient in saffron production and used to export it abroad as well.

Not sure why this somehow stopped only to return in recent years:

Saffron cultivation in AlUla supports crop diversification, economic growth

It is a crop that can be grown across much of KSA. I always wondered why more of our farmers did not focus on cultivating it on a larger scale let alone at all. It is one of the world's most valuable agricultural corps.

The ancient Hijazi city of Ta'if (located almost 2000 meters above sea level) - next to Makkah has been famous for its rose production, rose water and rose perfume production since antiquity.

This tradition is getting a boost.
