PAF SAM based Air Defense System - News, Discussion & Updates

It makes wonder if the PAF is looking at a potential PL-10 SL Shorad for point defence at PAF bases against Brahmos.

it could give IRIS T level performance but probably at a decently lower cost

Lack of demand? PAF could probably ask them to develop something like that or even do it locally if the Chinese allow it.

PL-5s too considering there is quite a decent stock of those

@AeronautIR this thread is dominated by SAM missile while AA gun are available in higher quantities in Pakistan services and reserve stocks for example Janbaz Force -National Guard).

- would you consider this assets as the main bulk against drones and Helicopters- if you would you rate the training and tactics adequate for the new drone warfare, would you recommend changing and updating tactics and training. Would you recommend to develop new ammunition (specially for anti drone operations) and vehicles which ( for example trucks to modify their carrier and body to house AA guns. I would go even deeper, and say they should pull out every single AA gun and overhaul it, put in on a vehicle, stabilise the axis, computerise the fire controller- this mobile CNC AA guns should be attached with mobile stinger units. They can the be integrated in the Air Defence Network or can be operate independent as light fire support units for armoured columns etc. multiple roles - as mobile but static AA guns have their limitations. Then there should be plans and prepared (towers) around in Cities (for higher velocity, coaxial and free firing or range) to put this AA guns on high buildings.

The same reason AIM-9 based shorads never really gained popularity, sheer physics of something designed to be air launched at high speed versus launching it from a ground static position, much energy expended just launching

Really surprised at the absence of AAA in the current threat environment.

What's the threat? Slow moving, low flying drones. And cruise missiles which are also low flying and relatively slow. Even the old kit like 23mm-4 Russian pieces would be effective.

In Pakistan Military AA guns are deployed for the pre or before Drone Era- new developments are not widely absorbed and executed. All our AA guns are static - not a single one have been mobilised- a huge potential which is not used.

1.3 tons for 70km.

RIM-66C, developed in the 1970's, operational in 1978, with a 70m range and a 650kg weight.

Or a SM-2 size missile with significantly less range then a ESSM, it's impressive how inefficient the HQ-16 is, it always amazes me why the Chinese chose this over the Sky dragon 50 which had a greater range while being half the size.

has to be incomeptence/treachery to porcure this system , does it have any advantages or did we have no other option

We had options including from the Chinese themselves.

Roketsan made a C-UAS system just like the L3Harris Vampire.

If the try services commit to it then we can have our local analogous system, we could equip them on TB-2s and Shahpars have them do drone hunting too
