Wamenhan: Prabowo Commits to Integrate N219 Aircraft in Development Policy​

Jakarta, IDM – Deputy Minister of Defense of the Republic of Indonesia Donny Ermawan Taufanto emphasized about the government’s commitment to N219, a multipurpose passenger aircraft made by PT Dirgantara Indonesia (DI).

"Mr. President Prabowo (Subianto) has committed to integrating N219 aircraft in development policy, pioneering air liaison and disaster response services, to strengthen the presence of countries in all corners of the archipelago," Donny said in a press release on Friday (13/6).

Donny said, the Defense Industry Policy Committee (KKIP) will play a role in guarding policy direction so that the national aerospace industry is actively and measurable in the national procurement scheme.

As a manufacturer, PT DI has held business matching in the series of Indo Defence 2024 Expo & Forum at JIExpo Kemayoran, Jakarta, Thursday (12/6).

On that occasion, President Director of PTDI Gita Amperiawan highlighted the urgency of expansion and coordination across sectors in the utilization of domestic products, especially N219 aircraft.

“We believe that when it comes to the multiplier effect, the biggest impact comes from the manufacturing sector, and the highest comes from the aerospace industry, which in this case we can push through the optimization of the utilization of N219 aircraft,” said Gita.

Deputy for Political, Legal, Defense and Security Ministry of VAT / Bappenas Bogat Widyatmoko in the discussion session conveyed that the contribution of the national aviation industry through the N219 program has a direct impact on the economy.

"From the involvement of local industries in the supply chain, job creation, to increased human resources capacity, N219 became the driver of strategic industry cluster growth," Bogat said.

As a form of commitment to accelerate the use of commercial N219, PTDI together with the Ministry of VAT / Bappenas has designed the business model of commercialization of N219 in the framework of National Economic Transformation, with the Riau Islands as a pilot project. (nma)

Good news: Production of the N219 aircraft ordered by the Indonesian Army (TNI AD) is currently underway at PT Dirgantara Indonesia. The current stage is the manufacturing of aircraft components in the Detail Part Manufacturing (DPM) area.


This production series of aircraft will carry the code N219-100.

Following the earlier installation of several robotic production tools in the KF-X/IF-X hangar at PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI), the company is now taking another step forward by introducing a Robotic Drilling System (RDS) for the N219 aircraft program.


The RDS serves as a crucial production aid that enhances accuracy, precision, and speed in the drilling and assembly of aircraft components—particularly in the fuselage and wing sections.


This technological advancement is part of PTDI’s efforts to strengthen its N219 production capacity, targeting an output of 12 aircraft per year, while ensuring that the assembly process meets international quality standards.

There’s more good news — renovation work is currently underway at the former Air Force MRO hangar (Benghar Sathar 15) to establish a Final Assembly Line (FAL) for the N219 aircraft at PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI).


With a production plan of 12 units per year, PTDI requires a hangar that can accommodate six aircraft at a time. This is because the existing N219 Final Assembly Line (FAL) hangar can currently accommodate only two aircraft simultaneously (and is also used as a Major Assembly area). Therefore, it is clearly insufficient to meet the target production rate of at least 12 aircraft per year.


If I’m not mistaken, the layout looks something like this (see image):

1. There are two lines.
2. Line 1 is for the N219, and Line 2 is for both the N219 and NC212.
3. Each line will have three stations.

To achieve this production target, the former Air Force MRO hangar (Benghar Sathar 15) will be utilized specifically as a dedicated Final Assembly Line, separate from the Major Assembly hangar.

DESKJABAR – PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) has confirmed the sale of four N219 aircraft units to the Indonesian Maritime Security Agency (Bakamla RI). PTDI presented the advantages of the N219 aircraft in relation to Bakamla’s operational needs, emphasizing its suitability and after-sales service support.


The N219 is a twin-engine turboprop aircraft with a 19-passenger capacity. It is designed for agile flight operations in remote and archipelagic maritime regions. The aircraft is available in civilian and military variants and can be customized according to user requirements.


Head of Bakamla RI, Vice Admiral Irvansyah, along with his delegation, visited PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) and was welcomed by PTDI President Director, Gita Amperiawan, and PTDI Director of Production, Dena Hendriana, in Bandung on Wednesday, October 22, 2025. The meeting was also attended by PTDI’s management team and the President Director of PT Nusantara Turbin dan Propulsi (PT NTP), Tarmizi Kemal Fasya Lubis, at the 9th-floor Paripurna Meeting Room, Nurtanio Building, PTDI Bandung.


The visit began with a presentation on PTDI’s company profile and its flagship products. This visit was part of efforts to follow up on the potential sale of four N219 aircraft configured as Maritime Surveillance Aircraft (MSA) to support Bakamla RI’s national maritime surveillance operations.


The promotion of the N219 aircraft to Bakamla is supported by Indonesia’s Ministry of National Development Planning (PPN/Bappenas). The N219 MSA variant features a full-option operational configuration, including a surveillance radar with a range of up to 160 nautical miles, capability to track over 200 targets, ship and oil spill detection systems, Anti-Jammer (ECCM) technology, and Search and Rescue (SAR) capabilities.


The potential sale package also includes a complete sales package and fleet readiness support, covering Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) services, training, technical assistance, and technical publications for a planned five-year support period. Following the presentation and discussion session, the delegation had the opportunity to visit PTDI and PT NTP’s production facilities and hangars.

So total contract is 6 planes for Army (one of them is amphibious version that later will be tested first for some time to get type certificate - could be a year = so Indonesian Army actually help N219 amphibious development)

Then 4 planes with MSA configuration for Bakamla. Previously PTDI also develop MSA variant with Infoglobal, so Infoglobal is also likely the other party that feel happy with this new contract.

Total ordered planes for N219 is now 10 planes. I expect the contract activation is for next year for Bakamla, not this year. While for Indonesian Army it is already effective with possibly done gradually, starting from one plane (improved version).

Based on Indonesian Aerospace statement. This mass produced N219 will be a refined version of N219 Basic that have been tested for about 3 years with two flying prototypes. Improved version from the prototypes version after getting type certificate in December 2020.

One of the reason of why around 114 Indonesian aerospace design engineers previously worked for KFX/IFX program went back home in beginning of 2020, after completion of KF21/IFX design in September 2019, is likely to help design refinement of N219 basic (after getting input from flight testing phase) and also helping MALE UCAV Elang Hitam development

BRIN Targets Accelerated Research and Development of Indonesia’s Amphibious Aircraft​

The Head of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Arif Satria, has set a target to accelerate research on the development of amphibious aircraft, also known as seaplanes.

He stated that BRIN is currently collaborating with PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) on the project.

“Since the N219 has already been prepared jointly by BRIN and PTDI, this also needs to be accelerated. Hopefully, by early 2027 or late 2026 the research can be completed, and then we can produce an amphibious aircraft,” Arif said at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday (15/1).

Arif explained that amphibious aircraft would be extremely useful for Indonesia.

He said such aircraft would improve connectivity between islands across Indonesia, which is fundamentally an archipelagic country.

In 2024, the Geospatial Information Agency (BIG) recorded that Indonesia has 17,380 islands.



On another occasion, Arif noted that BRIN has already produced several innovations together with PTDI, including the N219 aircraft, which is ready to be manufactured in greater numbers in accordance with government orders.

He also mentioned that BRIN will expand defense research cooperation with PT Pindad, including strengthening the development of the Maung tactical vehicle through enhanced research and automotive technology development.

“We will also collaborate with Pindad, which produces defense equipment, as well as our automotive industry. I believe the Maung that has already been produced by Pindad will continue to have its R&D strengthened,” Arif said.

In addition, Arif stated that BRIN continues to work in synergy with the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Kemendikti Saintek) to ensure that the national research ecosystem runs in an integrated and measurable manner and is capable of accelerating the emergence of strategic industrial innovations.

N219 Conducts First Flight Using New 5-Blade Propeller from Germany’s MT Propeller​

The N-219 Nurtanio aircraft, a twin-engine aircraft developed by Indonesia, has recently made a breakthrough by using a new propeller from Germany’s MT Propeller.

This was revealed by PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) through a post on its official Facebook account on March 7, 2025, where it uploaded a short video showing the N219 aircraft in flight.

“Taking performance to the next level.
Today, the N219 takes to the skies with its new propeller from MT-Propeller, delivering improved performance in the most challenging terrain,” PTDI wrote in the post.

In the video shared on PTDI’s Facebook account, the N219 can be seen taking off after exiting the PTDI hangar.

On both sides of the aircraft, the N219 is equipped with five-blade propellers, which PTDI stated are manufactured by MT Propeller.

Although PTDI did not specify the exact variant of the propeller used on the N219, the company has long cooperated with the German manufacturer to provide five-blade MTV-27 propellers for the NC212i aircraft.

“The propeller produced by Germany’s MT Propeller generates lower noise when the engine is running.
In addition, the engine does not experience sudden jolts when operating on a single engine during flight,” reported Antara on October 28, 2024.

The MTV-27 propeller has also been certified by EASA (European Union Aviation Safety Agency).

“As reported by EASA, the MTV-27 is equipped with a start pitch lock, which prevents the propeller from moving below its optimal speed.
The use of the MTV-27 on the NC212i has proven compatible with the installed engine, the Honeywell TPE331, resulting in lower noise and vibration during aircraft operations,” PTDI stated in its official release on December 4, 2023.

Before it is designed, of course they are already thinking about market. Domestic market are the main target. Do you know Indonesia has around 1000 airfields ?

No I did not - but I guess with such a layout of the country, the N129 makes a lot of domestic sense.
