Institute of Space Technology (IST) faculty and students with collaboration of Pakistan National Space Agency SUPARCO, Asia Pacific Space Cooperation Organization (APSCO) and China’s Shanghai Jio Tong University has successfully designed and developed Lunar CubeSat named ICUBE-Qamar.

ICUBE-Qamar orbiter carries two optical cameras to image lunar surface. Following successful qualification and testing, ICUBE-Qamar has now been integrated with Chang’e 6 mission. Chang’e 6 is 6th in series of China’s lunar exploration mission. The ICUBE-Qamar launch is scheduled for the second quarter of 2024, marking a significant step in Pakistan’s space exploration.

Need valued input of respected think tank members.

I believe this isn't worth celebrating much. Incredibly basic and simple tech in the aerospace world yet we still had to leech off Chinese expertise to do it.

All it shows is our weakness, like that small brother who needs his hand held.

Being an IST grad this is indeed something to be proud of for me. I-Cube 1, which was all the rage when I was there, was the first cubesat IST launched. I think it was IST's flagship project. It took 6-8 years to make and contact was lost pretty soon (or never established). It was made with COTS kits. But it was an important first step.

This is a second step. Going to the moon no less. It is a great opportunity. I am pretty sure there's heavy Chinese involvement because I saw several seminars by Chinese researchers on several subsystems of this cubesat.

Now, internationally, is it a big deal to launch cubesats? No. My university in the US launches several every year - almost like a grad course project. But considering Pakistan's circumstances, something is better than nothing.

Trivia: The cubesat is named Qamar. And the guy leading it is Qamar-ul-Islam. Probably a coincidence. Or not lol.

I am a fan of their incubation centre. NUST and UET are doing great work. A lot of my friends children attend NUST so I keep getting updates what projects they are working on every time we meet up.
NSTP is great. It provides space for a lot of vibrant companies.

NUST is okay but a lot of schools suffer from the usual Pakistani issues like uncle dictators but you knew that.

64 billion USD is not even enough for 1 month. It costs 1 trillion USD a year to fight Russia.
