The 2.2GW Neom green hydrogen and ammonia project in Saudi Arabia has completed construction and is currently being commissioned for a start of operations in 2027, according to one of its developers, Acwa.

“The plan is basically commercial operation will be next year,” said Acwa CEO Samir Serhan on a recent earnings call.

He added that construction is “finished”, and that the plant is currently being commissioned to meet the target of beginning operations in 2027.

Acwa is one of three companies in the joint venture developing the Neom green hydrogen and ammonia project, alongside [American] industrial gases firm Air Products and the Saudi government’s regional development vehicle, Neom.

A final investment decision (FID) had been taken back in 2023.

Once operational, the Neom green hydrogen and ammonia complex will be the largest by electrolyser capacity in the world, at more than quadruple the size of the current largest project, Envision Energy’s 500MW plant in Chifeng, China.

While Air Products had initially agreed to be the Neom project’s sole offtaker of green ammonia, the industrial gases giant has since finalised a deal last month with [Norwegian] fertiliser firm Yara to sell on volumes that Air Products has not managed to sell on a commission basis.

Earlier in July, Acwa had announced it had been granted the exclusive right to export green hydrogen and its derivatives from Saudi Arabia, although the company has clarified that this will mainly relate to the company leading on development of these projects in the nation rather than collecting fees from other firms’ projects.

Serhan confirmed on the earnings call that Acwa is currently finishing up front-end engineering design for its next giant green hydrogen project in Yanbu, which would be around twice the size of Neom and built in multiple phases.
