PM Shehbaz orders up to 60% of federal imports through Gwadar Port

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the federal government will route up to 60% of official imports through Gwadar Port to make it operational. He also announced a Rs70 billion solar tube-well shift in Balochistan.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said the federal government will route up to 60% of its official imports, including wheat and machinery, through Gwadar Port in an effort to make the facility operational.

Addressing the Balochistan National Workshop, the prime minister described Gwadar Port as a “magnificent harbor” for the region, saying its deep draft could accommodate vessels of up to 100,000 tons.

Sharif said that, as prime minister, he had issued orders for federal government imports to be routed through Gwadar Port, with the share potentially reaching 60%. The move, he said, was intended to help operationalise the port.

The prime minister also linked Balochistan’s development with Pakistan’s broader economic progress, saying the country could not advance until the province joined the development and prosperity seen in other parts of Pakistan.

Addressing grievances in the province, Sharif said legitimate complaints would be heard and resolved through dialogue, adding that the federal government was willing to engage repeatedly with Balochistan to address such concerns.

The prime minister also highlighted the government’s efforts to reduce the cost of electricity supplied to agricultural tube wells in Balochistan.

According to Sharif, the federal government had been facing significant losses in relation to the tube wells and had therefore devised a plan costing around Rs70 billion to convert between 20,000 and 22,000 tube wells from electricity to solar energy.

He said the Balochistan government had offered to contribute 30% towards the project, while the federal government provided Rs40 billion.

Sharif said that more than 20,000 tube wells had now been shifted to solar energy under the initiative.

Gwadar port chief reviews donkey slaughterhouse operations

GWADAR - Gwadar Port Authority (GPA) Chairman Noor-ul-Haq Baloch visited a donkey slaughterhouse operated by Hangeng in the Gwadar Free Zone and was briefed on production activities, officials said.

The company also has donkey-farming operations associated with its slaughterhouse business.

During the visit, Baloch said industrial projects in the Free Zone could contribute to Pakistan’s economy and exports. He said GPA was seeking to attract investment and support industrial development in Gwadar.

The Free Zone forms part of the wider China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) framework and is intended to support production, processing and commercial operations linked to domestic and overseas markets.

The longer-term contribution of such projects will depend on production capacity, overseas market access, logistics and compliance with applicable animal-health and export requirements. Links with local suppliers and workers would also be important to any wider benefits for Gwadar.
