One million connections and counting: Emirates customers embrace Starlink Wi-Fi

DUBAI, UAE, 2 July 2026: Emirates customers have made more than one million connections to Starlink Wi-Fi since the service was introduced across the airline's fleet 7 months ago, marking a major milestone in the evolution of inflight connectivity. More than a Petabyte of data has already been used by customers and feedback on the service has been exemplary - with many commenting that the Wi-Fi is ‘better than at home.’

With over 60 Starlink-equipped Emirates flights taking to the skies every day, customers are choosing to connect to high-speed Starlink Wi-Fi to stream content, join video calls, browse social media, game online and stay connected with family and friends throughout their journey.

The one million milestone reflects the rapid adoption of Emirates' next-generation connectivity service, currently available on 33 Boeing 777 aircraft and three Airbus A380s, with installations continuing at pace across the airline's fleet and more aircraft with Starlink taking flight every week.

From kilobits to gigabits

Emirates has long been a pioneer in onboard connectivity and was among the first commercial carriers to introduce internet access onboard the Airbus A380, with first-generation systems delivering less than 1 Mbps of total aircraft bandwidth. Emirates' existing inflight Wi-Fi service already enables customers to stay connected throughout their journey, with access to messaging, email, web browsing and social media on most flights. Complimentary access is available for all Emirates customers.

Today, Emirates is setting a new benchmark with Starlink-equipped A380 aircraft capable of delivering more than 2 Gbps of combined bandwidth, so that customers in all classes can enjoy a seamless, complimentary internet experience capable of live calls and streaming at 40,000 feet.

Engineering connectivity at an unprecedented scale

Following the successful rollout of Starlink across the Emirates Boeing 777 fleet, the service has also been introduced to the Airbus A380. As the world's largest passenger aircraft, the A380 features three Starlink antennas, specifically designed to support its double-deck layout and high passenger capacity. The system delivers enhanced coverage, capacity and performance across all cabin classes. Future planned enhancements will include integrating Live TV streaming to Emirates' award-winning inflight entertainment system – ice, which customers can already do on their personal devices.

Bringing Starlink to more Emirates customers

To support rapid deployment across the fleet, Emirates has already begun Starlink installations at Emirates Engineering facilities in Dubai, accelerating the introduction of next-generation connectivity across more aircraft. With installations already completed on 33 Boeing 777s and three Airbus A380s, Emirates remains committed to bringing complimentary, ultra-fast Wi-Fi to as many customers as possible, as quickly as possible.

Emirates’ commitment to innovation

The introduction of Starlink on the Airbus A380 forms part of Emirates' continued investment in elevating the customer experience across every stage of the journey. Alongside one of the aviation industry's most ambitious fleet retrofit programmes, Emirates continues to introduce innovations that enhance comfort, choice and connectivity for millions of travellers worldwide. To date, 128 aircraft have undergone a complete cabin refurbishment, including the introduction of Premium Economy, refreshed Business and First Class products, upgraded Economy cabins and enhanced inflight entertainment systems offering more than 6,500 channels of content.

Aer Lingus flights now have free Wi-Fi due to 'gamechanger' Starlink

Aer Lingus has labelled Elon Musk’s Starlink service a “gamechanger”, after equipping the first of its planes with the satellite technology.

Passengers on the Aer Lingus flight EI105 from Dublin to JFK yesterday were able to enjoy free Wi-Fi on board their seven hour long journey across the Atlantic to the United States.

Previously, free Wi-Fi was only available to Aer Lingus passengers in business class, while those in economy had to pay a fee.

Aer Lingus now plans to roll the service out more widely across its fleet this year.

Speaking to Newstalk’s Technology Correspondent Jess Kelly, Aer Lingus spokesperson Susanne Carberry said Starlink has “really been a gamechanger”.

On Newstalk Breakfast, Jess said the service will “super fast, 4K streaming quality”.

“This is going to become the norm,” she said.

“So, you have no more excuses for missing that Zoom call or Teams call with your boss or whomever it is when you're on your travels.”

Volaris to Equip Entire Fleet With Starlink Wi-Fi in 2027

Volaris will introduce Starlink satellite internet across its entire Airbus fleet beginning in 2027, becoming the first airline based in Mexico, Costa Rica, and El Salvador to offer the service.

The rollout will cover more than 150 Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft, allowing passengers to access high-speed, low-latency Wi-Fi from takeoff to landing. Starlink, developed and operated by SpaceX, uses a constellation of satellites in low-Earth orbit to provide connectivity capable of supporting streaming, video calls, messaging, online work, and other high-bandwidth activities.

“Today at Volaris, we announced the incorporation of Starlink across our entire fleet,” wrote Enrique Beltranena, President and CEO, Volaris, on LinkedIn. He described the system as the world’s most advanced satellite constellation and said it would provide what the company calls “the fastest Wi-Fi in the skies.”

Korean Air To Launch Free Starlink Wi-Fi

Korean Air has confirmed its policy to provide passengers with Starlink-based in-flight Wi-Fi, which it plans to introduce sequentially starting in the second half of this year, for free. This means that in-flight internet, previously perceived as a paid ancillary service, is changing into a basic service. The industry anticipates that free internet services have the potential to spread throughout the domestic aviation industry, starting with Korean Air.

Korean Air plans to apply this service first to its long-haul aircraft, the Boeing B777-300ER and Airbus A350-900, and complete the introduction to all aircraft by the end of next year. Starlink is also scheduled to be applied to airlines under the Hanjin Group, including Asiana Airlines, Jin Air, Air Busan, and Air Seoul. Previously, Korean Air announced its plan to introduce Starlink in December last year.

According to related industries on June 5, Korean Air recently decided to provide the Starlink in-flight internet service, which is scheduled to be introduced after the third quarter of this year, to passengers for free. Although the plan to introduce Starlink was previously disclosed, whether it would be provided for free had not been confirmed. With this decision, Korean Air passengers will be able to use high-speed Wi-Fi on long-haul routes without any separate payment.

WestJet has equipped its 100th Boeing 737 aircraft with TELUS Starlink in-flight Wi-Fi, making it the largest fleet of Starlink-enabled 737s in the world. Starlink as a public wifi is quite alright. But how does the economics make sense? It's not cheaper than mobile internet, not faster than 5G either.

Recently Flew on WESTJET (between Toronto-Calgary) and was able to enjoy free wifi (being westjet reward member) on both segments.

It kept all the children in their seats nicely when they watched their fav cartoons on youtube for all the 4 hour flight. Good experience. westjet-wifi.jpg
