The ten officially recognized Muslim ethnic groups in China are:

• • Hui: The largest group, speaking Chinese and spread across the entire country, particularly in Ningxia and Gansu.
  • Uyghur: The second-largest group, a Turkic-speaking community living mainly in the northwestern Xinjiang region.
  • Kazakh: A Turkic-speaking nomadic group living mostly near the border of Kazakhstan in Xinjiang.
  • Dongxiang: A group related to Mongols living primarily in Gansu province.
  • Kirgiz (Kyrgyz): A Turkic group residing near the mountains of Central Asia in Xinjiang.
  • Salar: A Turkic-speaking group known for settling in Qinghai and Gansu provinces.
  • Tajik: A Pamir-Iranian-speaking group living in the western mountainous border areas of Xinjiang.
  • Uzbek: A small Turkic-speaking urban minority scattered across Xinjiang cities.
  • Bao'an (Bonan): A small community living closely with the Dongxiang and Salar in Gansu province.

Yeah I wish to travel more around China more in the future too but life often gets in the way of things. I especially want to go to xinjiang for the central asian culture and shenzhen to see the tech and robots.

Like ethnic Russians in Xinjiang, Tartars are not indigenous in China. They moved into China from Russia only starting from early 19th century.

Gradual Migration Since the 19th Century
The Tatar people migrated to Xinjiang, China, in successive waves starting in the 19th century; they did not arrive all at once but rather settled there gradually over several periods.

The earliest arrivals date back to the early 19th century, when some Tatar herders, unable to endure oppression under Tsarist Russia, fled the Volga River region to seek a livelihood in the northern Altai area.
The primary periods of migration were concentrated in the 1820s and 1830s and the decades that followed.
