For anyone who caters to or considers Putin larger than life politician... this would be perplexing...
Putin has been had at every single point of contention... he acquiesced to the detriment of Russian interests. Just in Ukraine alone... he had given sweetheart deals to Europe to be in their good books... be included, accepted... so much so that Merkel even said the quiet part out loud.

Today after so many casualties and economic losses... and knowing the pickle orange is in... when it was US provided guidance that was taking out Russian refineries... the inevitable goal of which was to have Europe sign longterm energy contracts with US suppliers providing American, Canadian and Venezuelan refined products and distillates.
Now for the midterms orange needs favors... what tangibles did Putin get for Russia? And this isn't even long-term need... Orange just has to cross the hump and that is it...
This isn't geopolitics... this is stupid and shortsighted.

Not even close. Afghanistan led by Taliban is a threat that must be closely monitored. The Wahabi threat along the border as a legacy of western presence in Afghanistan can be a common ground for cooperation with Taliban but it cannot be a reason to claim Afghanistan is a natural ally of Iran.

Saying that Afghanistan is a natural ally of Iran, is an over statement. Taliban has deep contradicting and in some cases conflicting ideology with Iranian one. Yes there maybe cooperation with Afghans regarding threats that threatens both but still your statement is exaggeration.

If you said that about Pakistan, i could give it a chance. Still Iran-Pakistan relationship is badly influenced by Saudi shadow and western pressure on Pakistan which forces Pakistanis to consider balancing measures.

But all in all, Pakistan is more civilized, more disciplined compared to Afghanistan.

It was Americans that initially begged Pakistan to be mediator and help ease tensions. Pakistan also used this opportunity in its own favor. This mediation also gave a chance to Iran to regroup its air defense forces.
