China has officially started construction on the Motuo Hydropower Station (also referred to as the Yarlung Zangbo or Lower Yarlung Tsangpo mega-dam project) in Tibet. [1, 2, 3]
- Project Scale & Output: The project consists of five cascade hydropower stations designed to generate 300 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually with an installed capacity of 60 gigawatts. [1, 2, 3]
- The Britain Comparison: This 300 billion kWh annual power output is roughly equivalent to the total annual electricity consumption of the entire United Kingdom (Britain). [1, 2, 3]
- Compared to the Three Gorges Dam: It will generate nearly three to four times more energy than the Three Gorges Dam (China's current record holder) and is built at an estimated cost of $167 billion to $170 billion. [1, 2, 3]
- Design & Engineering: Instead of relying on a massive traditional surface reservoir, engineers are utilizing massive underground tunnels to drop the river water through a 2,000-meter elevation plunge near the Great Bend of the Yarlung Zangbo River. [1, 2, 3]
- Geopolitics & Concerns: Downstream neighbors India and Bangladesh have raised serious alarms regarding seismic risks in the Himalayas and potential Chinese control over water flows into the Brahmaputra River. [1, 2, 3]
