India’s infrastructure major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured contracts worth up to $1 billion to design and build two key system packages for Dhaka Metro Rail Line 1.

The contracts cover track works, electrical systems, signalling, telecommunications and platform screen doors, the company said in a stock exchange disclosure.

Dhaka Metro Rail Line 1 is Bangladesh’s first underground metro rail project. It will connect Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) to Kamalapur, passing through Rampura, Malibagh and Rajarbagh, before branching towards Purbachal.

L&T is an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) and high-tech manufacturing conglomerate.

The company said the awards build on its previous work in Bangladesh, where it won and delivered the integrated railway systems package for Dhaka Metro Line 6, the country’s first metro rail corridor.

The announcement follows the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase approval of eight construction packages for Metro Rail Line 1 and Line 5 (Northern Route), worth about Tk 58,500 crore.

L&T classified the combined contracts as a “major” order under its standardised reporting framework, which defines such orders as those valued between ₹5,000 crore and ₹10,000 crore.

Good news for the Indo-BD rapprochement. Hopefully there will be more such contracts.

Regards

It has nothing to do with indo bd relationship. It was JICA.
Why is JICA making sovereign decisions for Bangladesh, and that too in favour of Indian conpanies ? They may be providing some loans, but it is Bangladeshi taxpayers who are on the hook to repay them.

Sir ji, JICA's loan conditions and procurement rules influence which companies are eligible to bid and which company ultimately wins a contract...

The basic precondition I believe is that you have to put in a competitive bid- I suspect without bribery and corruption the taller than mountain friend can't compete with top Indian firms.

Blum Pai,

Hopefully Indians will teach bongs how to make a good use of train tracks...

Sadly in ModiFied India, people have lost sight of what train tracks were originally meant for.

Btw , long time no glimpse of yours , is everything ok.

Thanks for remembering- yeah just a bit tied up lately.

Regards

JICA always had a soft corner for India, they financed matarbari to help north east India.

Even thou sonadia was a better location for us, these japs in cahoots with Indians forced Hasina to cancel sonadia.

Japs claim to have a very high morals and ethics, yet they never leave any nook and crook unchecked to milk out their advantages.

They willingly looked the otherway when Hasu cult members were stealing from projects and paved the way for them to steal more.

Indians on the other hand are famous for their bribe culture.

Correct me if I’m wrong. Is this the single biggest contract India has ever won in Bangladesh?

if so, quite a feat!

China seems to have stepped back and India is now more favoured.

Looks like BNP is struggling to keep the balance between China and Indian involvement in BD.

You Indians must be loving this BNP government.

There’s only one letter between BNP and BJP after all!

Interesting times.
