Old Man's Corners

Incoming Grumpy old man rant....

It's midnight and 68 degrees outside.

My neighbor has something running full blast behind his fence and it is either
1) Their multiple A/C units
2) Some kind of swimming pool circulation or drainer thing
3) mega heat pump

Wow. That's too warm for so far up north! I had 63 last night lowest and 67 the night before. Unusually warm but tonight sinking to 49. Last two nights, we just opened the bedroom windows and slept under the ceiling fan. And almost pindrop silence outside--you know our 'Evil Dead' house location!

Speaking of Halloween: We took Uber to the downtown on the Halloween night. The first Uber guy came to pickup at our house within 5 minutes of the order and we rushed to in front of the house. We saw him on the phone app just driving around the neighborhood trying to find our house, and finally gave up and left! Our house can't be seen from the street: It is 800 ft off the street and behind many trees. There is not even a street light except for the one we had the power company installed at our gate--we pay $10/month for that. Anyway, I ordered another Uber ride and that would take 15 minutes to arrive. We decided to just walk to the gate to flag the poor driver otherwise we would miss that too. The driver lady still missed us but saw us flashing our phone's flashlight and turned around.

I remember when I was 7 or 8 I got the luck of the draw to ride with my aunt (dad's sister) and uncle because there wasn't room in the other cars and they had the windows up and ac full blast as both smoked their long looking cigarettes and gave no F's.

Growing up in Karachi, smoking was quite common. My dad smoked in the house and in the car. But he had the car windows open--he didn't want to burn extra fuel running the A/C!
My poor wife grew up in a household where her parents and her two brothers smoked in the living room watching tv; she was the only non-smoker. Their family house in rural South didn't have many windows, no central HVAC system. Poor she!

I can remember (wish I didn't), riding in the back seat of a 1973 Chrysler Newport along with my brother and two other brothers.

Up front was dad and Dick, father of the other two boys.

Road trip to a family function, women and infants took the van.

Spring time, around St. Patrick's Day, Dick was feasting on corned beef, cabbage and smoking cheap cigars.

We were dying in the back seat from all the flatulence. Remember gagging and looking at my father in the front seat, looking like he's going to puke.

"$&@#, Dick, pull #$-@#$ over, and let the kids breathe!"
