There is plenty of unemployment and homelessness increase in china and it feels very strange because the Chinese economy is actully growing from year to year but there is so many layoffs especially in places like Shenzen, Shanghai and other 1-tier cities.
Can anyone explain to us how this phenomenon came to be... You got a growing Economy + out of nowhere surge of unemployment = rapid Homelessnes... The result doesn´t make sense. This came out of nowhere..

U.S. columnist and political commentator Gordon G. Chang recently cited an estimate of 47.5 million homeless people in a an article for The Hill. Chang acknowledged that estimates vary widely and argued that China’s deteriorating economic conditions could mean the number has risen further.
A January report by United Press International (UPI) separately cited estimates circulating among Beijing-based analysts that put China’s homeless population at about 50 million. According to the report, roughly 60 percent were believed to be younger people, with an average age of about 33.

Gemini´s take:
It can seem deeply paradoxical that unemployment and homelessness are rising in China—a country known for its massive economic growth, hyper-modern cities, and an enormous surplus of empty housing (often referred to as "ghost cities").
When looking closely at the data, this situation stems from a combination of a structural economic slowdown, systemic loopholes for rural migrants, and a severe job crisis for young adults.
Why Are Unemployment and Homelessness Rising?
In my honest opinion the fault comes from overly micromanaging done by China. When you start to overly micromanage an economy things like this can occur which is bizarre and unexpected which means you can upset an economy like an upset stomach and probably comes from to much micromanaging. Let the economy just take it´s course and do not put to much strictions, open the economy up and put less strictions on everything.
Let life take it´s course sometimes and only manage it slightly from the central bank by protecting the currency and valuta value but do not micromanage the businesses, do not put to much strictions but just apply minimum strictions.

China’s Flexible Workforce Could Reach 320 Million as Homelessness Concerns Grow
Recent reports and estimates cited by China analysts have suggested that the number of homeless people in China could run into the tens of millions, although reliable nationwide figures are difficult to verify. The reports come amid mounting concerns over China’s weak labor market, elevated youth unemployment, and the growing number of workers relying on temporary and gig-economy jobs.U.S. columnist and political commentator Gordon G. Why Are Unemployment and Homelessness Rising?
- The Bursting Property Bubble: The real estate sector historically drove up to a third of China’s economy. Massive defaults among giant property developers have severely crippled the construction industry and all related service sectors, wiping out millions of blue-collar jobs.
- Catastrophic Youth Unemployment: China is dealing with a severe labor market mismatch. A record 12.7 million university students graduated into the workforce, but the tech, private education, and entertainment sectors that used to hire have shrunk due to regulatory crackdowns. In the second half of 2026, the official urban youth unemployment rate hovered around 18% to 18.9%.
- Automation and Supply Chain Shifting: The government’s heavy push toward factory automation has displaced low-skilled workers. Concurrently, geopolitical tensions and economic strains have prompted foreign corporations to shift manufacturing out of China.
- The Hukou (Household Registration) Trap: China’s hukou system ties a citizen's social benefits to their hometown. When rural migrant workers lose their jobs in manufacturing hubs like Guangdong, they have no legal right to local unemployment benefits, subsidized public housing, or welfare in the city. If their personal savings run out, they have no safety net.
