There is plenty of unemployment and homelessness increase in china and it feels very strange because the Chinese economy is actully growing from year to year but there is so many layoffs especially in places like Shenzen, Shanghai and other 1-tier cities.

Can anyone explain to us how this phenomenon came to be... You got a growing Economy + out of nowhere surge of unemployment = rapid Homelessnes... The result doesn´t make sense. This came out of nowhere..

China’s Flexible Workforce Could Reach 320 Million as Homelessness Concerns Grow

Recent reports and estimates cited by China analysts have suggested that the number of homeless people in China could run into the tens of millions, although reliable nationwide figures are difficult to verify. The reports come amid mounting concerns over China’s weak labor market, elevated youth unemployment, and the growing number of workers relying on temporary and gig-economy jobs.

U.S. columnist and political commentator Gordon G. Chang recently cited an estimate of 47.5 million homeless people in a an article for The Hill. Chang acknowledged that estimates vary widely and argued that China’s deteriorating economic conditions could mean the number has risen further.

A January report by United Press International (UPI) separately cited estimates circulating among Beijing-based analysts that put China’s homeless population at about 50 million. According to the report, roughly 60 percent were believed to be younger people, with an average age of about 33.
----------------------------------------------------------

Gemini´s take:

It can seem deeply paradoxical that unemployment and homelessness are rising in China—a country known for its massive economic growth, hyper-modern cities, and an enormous surplus of empty housing (often referred to as "ghost cities").
When looking closely at the data, this situation stems from a combination of a structural economic slowdown, systemic loopholes for rural migrants, and a severe job crisis for young adults.

Why Are Unemployment and Homelessness Rising?
  • The Bursting Property Bubble: The real estate sector historically drove up to a third of China’s economy. Massive defaults among giant property developers have severely crippled the construction industry and all related service sectors, wiping out millions of blue-collar jobs.
  • Catastrophic Youth Unemployment: China is dealing with a severe labor market mismatch. A record 12.7 million university students graduated into the workforce, but the tech, private education, and entertainment sectors that used to hire have shrunk due to regulatory crackdowns. In the second half of 2026, the official urban youth unemployment rate hovered around 18% to 18.9%.
  • Automation and Supply Chain Shifting: The government’s heavy push toward factory automation has displaced low-skilled workers. Concurrently, geopolitical tensions and economic strains have prompted foreign corporations to shift manufacturing out of China.
  • The Hukou (Household Registration) Trap: China’s hukou system ties a citizen's social benefits to their hometown. When rural migrant workers lose their jobs in manufacturing hubs like Guangdong, they have no legal right to local unemployment benefits, subsidized public housing, or welfare in the city. If their personal savings run out, they have no safety net.
---------------------------------------

In my honest opinion the fault comes from overly micromanaging done by China. When you start to overly micromanage an economy things like this can occur which is bizarre and unexpected which means you can upset an economy like an upset stomach and probably comes from to much micromanaging. Let the economy just take it´s course and do not put to much strictions, open the economy up and put less strictions on everything.

Let life take it´s course sometimes and only manage it slightly from the central bank by protecting the currency and valuta value but do not micromanage the businesses, do not put to much strictions but just apply minimum strictions.

Vision Times is owned by Falungong. It's literally lunatic garbage fake news.

I am not familiar with Falungong but the news itself is well established and current phenomenon.

This is no anti-China thread and I have zero agenda. I just want to know how this is possible. It doesn´t make sense to me personally but then again it is happening.

I am not out to distort the reality China is doing good and rising this is fact but this new thing is very very recent and came out of nowhere.

Lol, quoting Gordon Chang, the architect of China forever collapsing.

If 50 millions Chinese are homeless, that's roughly 4.0% of Chinese population and 50 times the homeless population in US, there would be no way for China to hide, tourists will see them everywhere on the parks and streets. lol. Besides, about 90% to 96% of Chinese households own the home they live in.

Just give me one good explaination on this. If it is entirely fake news or not or if there is reasons for this.

I will get this thread closed.. Just give me a good inside information type of answer.

Cause I am seeing this news rampant on Youtube, Social media, and news articles

What made China great is micromanaging but sometimes it is a double edged sword and over micromanaging a country can backfire via unforeseen casading effect.

Do I believe this crisis can be solved and will be solved absolutely but society has to learn from this.

But what happen here is a great opportunity for a study case

if its gordon chang or falungong it is basically CIA paid anti china propaganda based on whatever fake numbers they make up. There is no accountability on their numbers at all.

Dear Pakistani friends, I am Chinese. I live in Hangzhou, a second-tier city in China, roughly ranked eighth. While there are indeed more people who are unemployed, no one is homeless, as almost everyone owns their own house. Even if people are unemployed, they won't go hungry, because as long as they are physically able, there are still many short-term jobs (so-called flexible employment). The situation of overnutrition still exists. For friends like me who are around 40 years old, how to lose weight remains the most important issue. Compared to a few years ago, there is indeed a pervasive atmosphere of melancholy and anxiety. People generally feel that opportunities have decreased. Originally, every family thought they could own three suites and two cars, but now they have to lower their expectations, so the divorce rate has also increased. ... This article is purely fictional and is only intended to promote the false image of China's lack of freedom that imperialists have been attempting to create for many years, with exaggerated and fictional arguments. It is recommended to close it to reduce unnecessary consumption of attention.

Why would every family wants to own 3 suites of housing ? Houses are meant for living, not unused empty properties for speculative investments, that's not healthy. Try to invest somewhere else.

Basically, as far as Taiwan is concerned, reports from a group of media outlets owned by 「Falungong 法輪功」 are usually reposted only by pro-Taiwan-independence media, and are usually read only by Taiwan independence supporters.

No country is perfect, and China is no exception, so naturally some people are unemployed, laid off, or homeless.

I'm not saying that none of these reports can be believed. However, after these anti-China media outlets have processed and repackaged the reports, what percentage (%) of the content is actually true? What percentage (%) is fabricated? It's hard not to have doubts.

Here are a few more obvious examples. According to their reports:
◉ More than 400 million people died in mainland China during the COVID-19 pandemic
◉ In 2025, the real population of mainland China is only about 780 million
◉ Another report says that in 2025, mainland China had only 500 million people left, and 14 million people died from organ harvesting.... 😱

Master 「Li Hongzhi 李洪志」, founder of Falungong 法輪功, said that the CCP has been covering up the epidemic, and that 400 million people in China have died from it.

The Epoch Times - Taiwan (大紀元時報 - 台灣)

In 2021, major overseas media reported that internal data from the CCP’s Ministry of Public Security showed that only about 780 million valid ID cards exist in China.

https://www.secretchina.com/news/b5/2026/01/30/1094279.html
Recently, an insider from the CCP’s Ministry of Civil Affairs revealed that the cumulative death toll since the outbreak of the epidemic has exceeded 500 million; in 2025, 14 million people were killed through “parts transfer”, with the post-80s generation being the main target.

[Secret China 看中國] China’s population is only 500 million! 14 million people mysteriously disappeared last year!

https://www.secretchina.com/news/b5/2026/04/28/1098366.html
Veteran media figure Li Dayu (李大宇) revealed a shocking piece of news:
The actual population of mainland China is not the 1.4 billion that the CCP has always officially claimed, but only 500 million!

Li Dayu (李大宇) said on his channel “Dayu Pai’an Jingqi” that an informant from the civil affairs system revealed that
the cumulative death toll since the outbreak of the epidemic has exceeded 500 million, with an abnormal peak in 2025,
about 14 million people were killed through so-called “organ transfer”, with the post-80s group being the main target.

They also like to spread rumors about Xi Jinping. According to them:
◉ Xi has reportedly suffered a stroke, been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer or other terminal illnesses, lost power multiple times, and been placed under house arrest.
◉ They once concluded that Xi Jinping had a serious health problem just because there was one more water cup on his desk.

All I can say is, these media outlets are crazy....

▼▼▼ Below are videos about Falungong sect leader 「Li Hongzhi 李洪志」. It is rumored that Falungong has more than 70 million followers worldwide.

Although some international IQ rankings show that Chinese people are relatively intelligent, there are actually plenty of idiots among us Chinese too, a great many of them... 😆

Falungong's Li Hongzhi, the cutest sect leader: “Once I emit qigong, I can turn aluminum into iron”

00:15 Li: Just by using my qigong, I can turn aluminum into iron.

00:42 Li: I turn aluminum sheets into iron, copper, silver, gold... (by emitting qigong)

Highlights of Master Li Hongzhi's remarks

00:22 Li: Humanity has experienced 81 devastating calamities

01:03 Li: The universe has been destroyed 9 times

01:13 Li: The Earth has been destroyed 8 times... Some Earths were destroyed, while others exploded.

02:59 Li: The Earth is the center of the universe, the universe’s garbage dump

17:31 All of humanity’s inventions were arranged by gods: Cai Lun’s papermaking, the invention of the compass... were all given to humanity by gods

21:42 The reason for the moral decline of Westerners: believing in science and not believing in religion?

22:59 Are evolution and universal gravitation wrong? (Li questions Darwin, Newton...)

25:16 The ozone hole was caused by the gods opening a window to let waste gases out, then closing it again

28:09 Li: The Moon is man-made, bringing light to the Earth’s night. The Moon is a device similar to a space station

29:07 Li: I can extend the time between cell divisions, thereby prolonging life

You’re posting fake news made by a cult that hates the Chinese government.

Hope you understand now. It’s not credible. Falungong literally has twenty different media platforms and they obsess about pumping out anti China news.

I suggest you use Google Maps to look at the street view in China. You won't find any homeless people in China.

Or you can use AI to judge the truth the news first.

Because land in China is state-owned, everyone has at least one residential base and a house in their hometown. Moreover, in China, activities such as drug trafficking and are crimes, and these activities breed homelessness, but Chinese law prohibits these actions.

The article you posted is a complete hoax, and there is absolutely nothing in it that corresponds to the facts.

I am no expert on this subject, but both I and the people around me have prioritized investing in real estate, while putting the rest of our capital into the stock market—which has consistently performed poorly. I suspect it will continue to underperform. In my limited view, this is because we live in a socialist country where the state aims to safeguard the livelihoods of the poor and the middle class; consequently, the development of capital is—whether intentionally or inadvertently—kept in check. Since the stock market serves as the primary and most effective instrument for both domestic and international capitalists to extract wealth from the poor and the middle class, it remains perpetually weak. Therefore, for ordinary people with limited funds, investing in the property market is a better option.
