Elon Musk hints Tesla FSD for China may be possible very soon

Chinese made Tesla are at number 3 place behind Volkswagen and far far behind BYD. Don't try to manipulate the narrative.

I'm not manipulating anything.
I only posted a shot of the top selling car models in China and you had a complete seething freak out.

Grrrr!!!! Don't post such facts!!! Oh that evil sh*t Elon Musk!!! You manipulator you!!!
I shake my fist in your general direction and seethe in anger!!!

Your chart clearly says Tesla is behind BYD and Volkswagen. You didn't pass grade 2 did you?

It's not my chart. It's from a Shanghai website...you know...Eastern media.

Are you somehow claiming Chinese media is misportraying the facts to calculate the top selling model ranking?

How about the title on this Chinese site:

2023国内最畅销车型:ModelY年度销冠,海鸥成最大黑马

You should just face up to the facts..instead of making excuses! :ROFLMAO:

Like I said, you should really stop cherry picking data.

This is like people griping during the Olympics saying the Gold Medal count is misleading and "cherry picking" because the overall medal count shows something else  ...as if that should somehow invalidate the Gold Medal count. However it does in their scorned eyes...and it shouldn't be shown...buried is preferred...unless of course their team is the gold medal count leader.

Like I said if you feel this site is misrepresenting the data to build this ranking chart then please speak up..because I'm not misrepresenting anything. It is YOU who is misrepresenting what the title of the chart means.

Maybe it is just an English language comprehension issue with you.

I said the Tesla Model Y was the top selling car Model in China for 2023 according to Chinese Media. Somehow your glass heart is very very very angry and insulted at them for highlighting an achievement by an American car company in the Chinese market.

ChineseMedia.png

Again please state what you feel is wrong about the above chart,

Sorry facts are facts dude.

👍Another impressive Gold medal achievement against heavy odds.

I am well aware you're attempting to score any kind of win out of desperation, but your data only exposed Tesla's weak position. Even funnier is that these cars are entirely made in China.

LOL! I'm glad you finally realize your fallacy in trying to desperately debate the chart's accuracy.

I'm sure you are that guy who always screams during the Olympics:

"No!! no!! Don't show the gold medal tally! Nooooooooo!! It's ONLY the total medals that counts!! The totals!!! No...no..no!!!"

Premier Li Qiang meets Elon Musk in Beijing as Tesla ramps up efforts to promote autonomous driving tech

  • Tesla’s autopilot and supervised full self-driving (FSD) options could soon be provided to its Chinese customers, Musk said in recent social media post
  • Musk’s latest visit also coincides with the 2024 Beijing Auto Show, which kicked off on Thursday and runs through Saturday

Premier Li Qiang met US billionaire Elon Musk in Beijing on Sunday, calling Tesla’s development in China “an example of success” in US-China cooperation, China’s state television reported.

Musk arrived in Beijing on Sunday amid hopes he can bring Tesla’s autonomous driving technology to China amid intensified competition with local electric vehicle (EV) makers in the world’s largest automobile market.
The meeting confirmed an earlier report by the Post that Musk was expected to meet senior Chinese officials at the State Council and “old friends” in Beijing.

In addition to meeting Musk, the premier toured the auto show in Beijing and talked with Tesla’s local rivals, including Xiaomi, a newcomer in China’s EV market, BYD, which is jostling with Tesla for the world’s top EV spot, and Geely, another major Chinese carmaker, according to the state television report.

The SpaceX and Tesla chief travelled to China at the invitation of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, meeting with CCPIT president Ren Hongbin to discuss further cooperation with the country, according to Chinese state-run broadcaster CGTN.

The Austin, Texas-based Tesla has faced fierce competition from Chinese EV makers in the past few years. It has cut the prices of its Shanghai-made vehicles by up to 6 per cent to maintain its leading position in China’s premium EV segment.

China has seen increased adoption of advanced driver-assistance systems and higher levels of autonomous driving functions in mass-produced cars, and Musk said Tesla’s autopilot and supervised full self-driving (FSD) options could soon be provided to its Chinese customers, when he was asked about it on X, the social-media platform formerly known as Twitter, by a Chinese Tesla owner.

Grace Tao, Tesla’s vice-president of external relations in China, wrote a commentary piece in China official newspaper People’s Daily on Friday, saying that autonomous driving is a key growth driver for the country’s new energy vehicle sector, arguing that the technology will hatch new business models such as robotaxis, a vision that Musk has embraced.

Musk’s latest visit to China coincides with the 2024 Beijing Auto Show, which kicked off on Thursday and runs through Saturday. The event has this year attracted more than 1,500 exhibitors, with the biggest names showing off their latest EVs. Tesla does not have a booth at the show and last attended in 2021, according to a Reuters’ report.

Musk has enjoyed the red carpet treatment during his previous China visits. In 2019, Tesla was allowed to drive cars into the Zhongnanhai compound, the living and working area of Chinese leaders, when former Premier Li Keqiang hosted the CEO, and during Musk’s three-day visit to Beijing last June he was received by then Chinese foreign minister Qin Gang.
During that visit Musk also met with Chinese vice-premier Ding Xuexiang and China’s commerce and industry ministers. The trip was warmly received by the Chinese public, with social-media posts focusing on the Chinese food Musk ate, and some referring to him as a “pioneer” and “brother Ma”.

Tesla, the leader in China’s premium EV segment, delivered 603,664 Model 3s and Model Ys made at its Shanghai Gigafactory to buyers in China last year, an increase of 37.3 per cent over 2022. The growth rate matched the 37 per cent rise in sales recorded in 2022, when it delivered about 440,000 vehicles.
Tesla has sold more than 1.7 million cars in China since it entered the market in 2012, and located it biggest factory in Shanghai, where Musk enjoys high levels of political support for the project. In a sign of its further commitment to China, Tesla bought a parcel of land in Shanghai to build a factory with a planned annual capacity of 10,000 Tesla Megapack batteries, which are used for battery storage stations.

Chinese EV makers have tried to lure consumers with improved assist-driving functions, such as city and highway autopilot navigation and smart parking. China is expected to be the biggest connected car market, followed by the US, India, Japan, and Germany, with electrification, autonomous and advanced infotainment capabilities being the major drivers for growth of the segment, according to a report from research firm Counterpoint.

However, driverless vehicles are still more of a dream rather than reality in China, where most high level self-driving robotaxis are only allowed to operate in designated suburban areas where traffic conditions are much less complex than in cities.

Autonomous car companies have been struggling to eke out a profit in China due to heavy operating costs and low revenues from maintaining large robotaxi fleets. Baidu, which has robotaxi fleets in several cities, said its self-driving unit will focus on generating revenue and profits after burning cash for years. Smaller players such as WeRide and Pony AI have joined bigger carmakers to try and monetise services as they continue to operate robotaxis at a loss.

Elon Musk in China! @Yommie keep in mind the FSD v12 version being made public to North American users is months behind the internal one.

It appears Tesla has had the Dojo AI create v13 and are so incredibly amazed with it (possibly lightyears above V12) that Elon Musk is now actively selling FSD around the world.

There's approximately 2 million Tesla's driving on China's roads that are FSD capable.

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) CEO Elon Musk hinted that FSD (Full Self-Driving) may be available in China very soon, at a time of rapid evolution of driver-assistance features for local electric vehicle (EV) makers.

"It may be possible very soon," Musk said today in response to a question from a user on the X platform he owns about when FSD will come to China.

On November 22, 2023, Chinese media outlet China Fund News quoted a Tesla source as saying that work to bring FSD to China was moving forward.

Several Chinese government departments jointly issued a notice in November allowing cars supporting L3 and L4 autonomous driving to carry out road tests on a pilot basis in limited areas, and clarifying for the first time the determination of accident liability.

Against this backdrop, the entry of Tesla FSD into China, one of the major players in smart driving technology, was seen as entering the countdown stage, the report said.

In order to introduce FSD into China, Tesla has previously carried out a lot of preparatory work, the report noted.

In 2021, Tesla set up a data center in Shanghai, where all data generated by its China operations, including production data, sales data, service data and charging data, are stored entirely within China to comply with regulatory requirements.

Tesla had also set up an FSD operations team as well as a data labeling team in Shanghai, and had sent engineers from its headquarters to do training, the report said.

Tesla China has also been assisting regulatory authorities in pushing for high-level autonomous driving laws and regulations, according to the report.

Notably, analysts at CITIC Securities said in a research note last June that Tesla FSD faces two major issues in entering China -- data collection qualifications and supercomputing centers.

In China, even if Tesla obtains the data collection qualification, the probability is that it can only train the model locally in China, and the data may not be allowed to be transmitted back to the US, the team said.

This means that to achieve the same training efficiency as in the US, Tesla would need to set up a supercomputing center similar to Dojo in China, which would require a certain development cycle and cost, according to CITIC Securities.

Won't these cars use cameras and radars and sensors ? Shouldn't china be concerned about "CIA espionage" through these cars ? Shouldn't Tesla be banned in China just like TikTok is planned to be banned ?

I see hypocrisy here, kindly differentiate the both situations for me.

The 2 million Tesla cars on Chinese roads already do use cameras. However all uploads/downloads are from a Chinese controlled server (which BTW is probably also funneling the videos to Tesla's competitors)

They can stop the car uploads once FSD is considered acceptable. The uploads are only to train the driving software on local "rules of the road". The AI on a supercomputer uses the video to generate new software releases which are downloaded every few weeks by the car. After the software is deemed "good enough" the video/data uploads will be stopped as the car's computer handles things on its own using the last downloaded version without any internet connection needed.

Plus any security concerns with the video already taken can be handled by a third party Chinese company that could "blur out" anything not road related. Similar to what Google Maps does.
ac7.png

In fact I bet Elon Musk has already had that blur software written.

I see hypocrisy here, kindly differentiate the both situations for me.
Nope! They made sure their FSD strategy will be autonomous with no uploading/downloading needed. It will work with no internet access to Tesla's servers..so no espionage claims will be valid. Only a generic download link to Baidu maps is needed to figure out where the streets are (car already has BeiDou GPS) and pretty much all cars in China also already have this too...so this isn't some potential showstopper.

However those other companies (ie Chinese ones) that pushed and pushed and pushed the need for LiDAR will be screwed when they attempt to have it work worldwide. LiDAR systems require uploading/downloading to work continuously to stream in/out pre-generated LiDAR maps to compare to the ones generated on-the-fly by the car. They will all have to play the grueling "yes we are uploading potentially sensitive data" game while Tesla gets a totally free pass. 👍

elonMuskThinkingFSD.png
Elon Musk was WAY ahead of everybody else in thinking FSD through. He knew countries would try to throw the security risk thing at him and he headed them off by taking an incredibly hard route using just vision to get around it...a route many said was impossible without LiDAR.

Now he is in China..telling them he has his autonomous FSD system working ...and it isn't going to be a security risk.

Then he will be bouncing around to other countries of the world..and Tesla will be like Apple with the 1st release of the iPhone and have a huge headstart on everybody...and he is also thinking of taking over world taxi services too.
