anti-UAV systems ... apparently not deployed to Esfahan though!

We should see them more often and sporadic after the recent developments.

if you took a picture of Isfahan airbase and removed S-300. You couldn’t tell if the picture was taken in 2010 or 2024. All old air defense systems and no SHORADs protecting it.

Who knows how many of these air defense products Iran actually produces vs mock ups/prototypes and the ones that are produced what was quantity.

Iranian military assets been getting hit by quadcopters for years. These systems aren’t new. Even a soldier walking near the battery with an anti-drone gun or in a guard tower could have stopped this attack.

How many Hamas or Hezbollah quadcopters have hit Iron Dome/David Sling/Arrow?

How many of the countless Iraqi and Syria militia drones have hit US patriot/CRAM batteries on US bases?

You would think from all the empirical data Iran has gathered from resistance forces launching thousands of attacks, it could learn from its opponents in securing its own military assets.

Brothers we have been infiltrated: The Chinese stole my UAV bomber idea.

As many of you know for a few years I been asking Iran to build a supersonic (Mach 2+) Middle East reusable bomber drone in the spirit of D-21 used by USA in Cold War for recon. It that can fly high altitude and evade air defenses using its VLO design and high altitude fast speed to drop glide munitions on HVT targets behind enemy lines.

Well looks Chinese have decided that is a good idea

@Hack-Hook

Original stats for D-21 drone (from 1960s mind you):

  • Powerplant: 1 × Marquardt RJ43-MA-20S4 ramjet, 1,500 lbf (6.7 kN) thrust
  • Maximum speed: Mach 3.35
  • Cruise speed: 2,524 mph (4,062 km/h, 2,193 kn) (Mach 3.32)[44]
  • Range: 3,500 mi (5,600 km, 3,000 nmi)
  • Service ceiling: 95,000 ft (29,000 m)

By adding internal weapons bay and increasing size, it will reduce range which is already higher than iran needs anyway. At Mach 3+ and service ceiling of 95,000 feet it would be hard to intercept by any air defense system even today assuming it can be tracked reliably.

The biggest hurdle obviously is the engine, which I think with some Russian cooperation and ToT sharing can be overcome if they are allowed to mass produce the drone once Iran has finished the final prototype.

We know Iran is working on a ramjet engine for its supersonic drone program. Depending on how efficient and reliable it is, Iran could use it for the basis of a future bomber drone.

Haha I remember you saying that in the old forum.

Surveillance

The original form was surveillance yes as it was built in 1960’s when armed drones weren’t really a thing.

But the design can be incorporated into a offensive version just like how Iran took recon version of RQ-170 and made it armed.

I would not use the Chinese as a template for war systems strategy. Iran has inestimably more experience for obvious reasons.

China is much further along in large unmanned UAV projects and future AI driven projects.

Another mysterious drone bomber program, recently spotted

Iran is mostly still playing around with cheaper tech suicide drones and MALE drones (getting more obsolete by the day). It’s not really in the higher tech UAV space. It’s larger 1:1 RQ-170 scale program has largely stayed stagnant for past 7-8 years.

But iran is also limited due to lack of its own GPS constellation and military Sat comms.
