btw: Personally, I think the attribution of a position should depend on competence, not a reward or compensation. Rewards and compensation should use money directly.

Ruling party should be condemned for this corrupt quota law proposal. Killing of protesting students is abhorable. In any normal country a goverment would have to step down after such a turmoil.

But… there is no denying that BNP and its allies infiltrated the student protest and did major damage to public buildings, including brand new metro rail stations.

I dont care if youre student, Al, BNP Jaamat or whatever… but the moment you start damaging public property you should be shot on the spot!

A "perfect storm" has happened over the last 4 years in BD.

Covid-19, Ukraine war and also the corruption as regards "freedom fighter" quota have all come to a head now where desperate students feel they have little to lose by rising up against the government.

India has been able to mitigate the inability to provide enough jobs for graduates by literally sending in excess of 1 million of them to countries such as UK and Canada over the last 2-3 years, due to its gepolotical influence and having Indians in key government positions in those countries. BD does not have this option to alleviate the unemployment of its graduates.

Where do we go now from here?

It is obvious that the security forces used too much force and we need some kind of accountability as to those who gave orders to fire rashly.

Also the quotas need to radically be scaled back that they are a tiny portion of total goverment jobs and anyway recruitment should be based on merit.

Overthrowing this government would just bring chaos and instability and we may see a succession of short-lived governments and the attendant violence and extra economic pain to go along with this. Be careful what you wish for as the grass is not always greener on the other side.

Quota system has to be abolished completely.

If it is not BAL will deserve to be overthrown.

Like I already said, Hasina never agreed with it but needed to put on a “show” for the AL base.

Problem here is that she did not have enough control of the armed goons and hence why so many have died.

Supreme Court has already given her cover by pretty much abolishing the “freedom fighter” quota system.

BD is now going back to calm and apart from prosecution of a few of those who gave orders to fire rashly life will go on.

This incident is not at all threatening to Hasina’s rule as there is no mass civil society revolt happening.
