Protesters tear down statue of PM's father​

One demonstrator has told the BBC that a statue of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Ganabhaban - the prime minister's official residence - is being demolished by protestors.

He was Sheikh Hasina's father and an independence movement leader.

Sayem Faruk tells the BBC that the scenes are reminiscent of Saddam Hussein's statue being taken down in Iraq in 2003. He says people are attacking the statue.

Some personal cars of ministers abandoned in the area are also being damaged by the crowd, while other people are climbing on top of armoured vehicles, Faruk says.

He adds that army troops on the streets seem relieved by Hasina's departure.

I have not been following this thread at all - so i am gobsmacked by what i am hearing and seeing !!!!!!!!!!
She has resigned and left. Dont be suprised if she turns up in UAE - it seems that everyone ends up there.
I do hope calm heads prevail now and that there is peace and no further life is lost.
The people of Bangladesh have made history today and i hope it gives them the future they want and need.

Like you, I didn't follow this thread at all or the news about the BD riots lately. I did wonder why the 'quota system' for jobs was becoming an issue large enough to cause the mayhem. Surely, there were major underlying issues.
I thought BD was going well with the stability under Hasina but there is an end to everything.
I Wish the BD people the best.

The problem lies at the heart of BD politics, which is largely dysfunctional if compared with forexample western European democracies. The parliament has been de-facto dysfunctional for several decades. Whenever a party wins election, it immidiately goes on to systematically eliminate opposition parties, unlike a normal democracy where the opposition plays a vital role in the parliament by representing the voice of loosing party and contributing with meaningful critique of ruling party policies.

The role of the President in BD is largely ceremonial, and in this case a person handpicked by Hasina, from her own party. Therefore the president, with concern to BD political climate, is effectively unable to play a meaningful role in transitional times.

The institution with ability to both direct the transition to a new government, and keep law and order, is Bangladesh Army. No other party has the power or means to play that role in this cruicial moment.

It also depends on what direction India itself takes.
BD has no problem doing business with India or anyone. Bangladesh and India are neighbors after all. Win win cooperation is always welcome. But one-sided deals where BD acts as semi-vassals will not be accepted.

In the end, India have to accept the reality: Bangladesh is a independent country with a population of 180 million, which is huuge. More people lives in BD than in Russia or Germany which are Europes most popolous countries.

Why would Hasina head for India ?​

According to reports, the “safe place” Sheikh Hasina is headed to is its giant neighbour – India.

Over the years, India has been her biggest ally and this has worked well for both countries.

Bangladesh shares borders with a number of north-eastern Indian states – many of which have grappled with militancy over decades, and a friendly regime in Dhaka helps with that.

During her time in power, Hasina clamped down on anti-India militant groups in Bangladesh, winning friends in Delhi. She has also given transit rights to India to make sure goods from its mainland make it to those states.

Hasina, who forged close ties with India ever since she was first elected in 1996, has always justified Dhaka’s close relationship with Delhi.

During a visit to India in 2022, she reminded people of Bangladesh how India, its government, people and armed forces had helped the country during the independence war in 1971.

But her closeness to Delhi – and India’s backing of her - has been criticised by the opposition parties and activists who say India should be backing the people of Bangladesh and not a particular party.

The hindutva extremists are common enemy for all south Asia, and China helps south Asia balance the threat from India

It's important Bangladesh takes this opportunity to push out India and the hindutva influence completely

Imran Khan is fascist. No comparison with Bangladesh protests. PTI-supporter only movement just to install their fascist leader will always fail in Pakistan.

Now if somehow every party united to throw out establishment then that would be possible. But again not under fascist Imrandu.

Even if you give PTI seats based on 45 form then they will barely have majority. And all that because of anti-establishment vote. In Pakistan right now PTI/Imrandu is busy kissing establishment ass again for relief.
