Bangladesh Socio-Political Crisis 2024 and onwards

No, India is not indispensable. Don't peddle this nonsense. There is only one indispensable country in the world today and that's China.

They enjoy trade surplus with us. It's upto us to use it.

Too much emotional thinking and little rational here.

If we think China is some saviour as per Rohingya in 2017 then we are very much mistaken.

Rule No.1 of Geopolitics - Always balance and never give one country too much power over you.

USA-India-China are the key to BD's future and it does not really work if one is taken out of the equation.

The cabinet has a mix of members from all interest groups including Islamic Alem, Liberal, Hindu rep, Tribal minority Chakma rep and student rep

Then this will
Hasina wanted to drown him in Padma river - she literally said that. Harassed him with fake charges for years, because she was jealous of him. Alhamdulillah, I hope she is watching all this in TV and burning inside.

I love the idea but have reservations about Yunus' politicall skills for a decade.

In the book 'Banker to the Poor' he said 'If I become the president of the world bank first thing I do is shift HQ from Washington to the developing world'

And I thought 'isn't that sweet, Yunus thinks world bank is a bank'

Who will be the new preferred political leader for left-of-center voters in Bangladesh?

Yunus seems to be in good health at 84. We can potentially squeeze 5 years worth of service out of him, 10 years if we are lucky.

I just hope for the best regarding him in all ways. What a redemption finally for him.

You wouldn't believe the long conversations I've had with my best BD buddy in real life about Yunus.....just how BD thanks to its political scene, squandered what he could have brought to table for the country as whole if given the chance.

Sending serious best mojo and best luck vibes his way for task ahead and what he can contribute for the long term....the team he organises that carry on after him etc to reshape BD politics for the better. BD sorely needs it, this caliber!

Of course everything is relative to something.

China generally isnt actively involveld in any kind of regime change or color revolution type of thing. It saves them lot of energy and money. China usually just waits out and cooperates with the whoever runs the country.

It will get off topic to get into more here anyway. There is reason for Chinese psyche (and how it intersects with the CCP i.e state) and American one (and how that intersects with their state) being different in various essence but also noticeable similarities too once you factor in the contexts.

Tag me to discuss more about China some other time, after things have settled more w.r.t BD news. I think BD scene is something that will dominate lot of forum chat for a while.

DHAKA: Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus was sworn in on Thursday as the head of a 17-member transitional government in Bangladesh. This development follows weeks of protests that led to the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the dissolution of her Awami League government.

The oath-taking ceremony was conducted by President Mohammed Shahabuddin at the presidential office in Dhaka. Yunus, at 84, assumes the role of "chief adviser" to the transitional government, which is primarily composed of technocrats.

The transitional administration includes 16 advisers, among them Saleh Uddin Ahmed, former governor of Bangladesh’s central bank; retired Brigadier General M. Sakhawat Hossain; Dhaka University professor Asif Nazrul; human rights advocate Adilur Rahman Khan; attorney and environmentalist Syeda Rezwana Hasan; and women’s rights activist Farida Akhtar. The team also features two student leaders from the protests that prompted Hasina’s resignation and subsequent departure to India.

The formation of the transitional government was announced by Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman after Hasina fled the country. Yunus, who was in France at the time, returned to Dhaka on Thursday and expressed gratitude for the role of students in the recent political upheaval. “Bangladesh has begun a new chapter. We are thankful to those who made this possible; they (students) saved the country,” Yunus said upon his arrival.

The protests, which began in July, were sparked by disputes over civil service job quotas and resulted in over 400 deaths. Following these events, President Shahabuddin dissolved the parliament elected in January, during which Hasina secured her fourth term as prime minister.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), the main opposition group, has called for national elections within three months to ensure that power is returned to elected representatives.

Bro I have to agree with your sentiments. I do however have concerns about his age. I’ve witnessed the mess in the US.
I pray his senses stay with him for at least the next 2 years

If he can give BD a decent political system that can last the test of time, then he would have done his job and would go down in history as one of the greatest BD'shis.

Expecting anything more than 2 years out of an 84 year old man is both cruel and unfair to him.

Geography is as it is. Geography dosent negotiate. India is India, a big neighbor, wether we want it or not. This is pure realpolitik.

In many ways Bangladesh kind of in same situation as Vietnam. A country bordering and with historic long ties to a far larger civlization state.

In a ideal situation BD, India and Pakistan plus other South Asian nations, would separate defence policy from economic policies in the realm of trade. China forexample have huge two-way trade with Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam and Philipines. Even though Chinese and Japanese intensely dislike eachother, for historical reasons. Vietnam and China also have major contentions in certain areas. Koreans dislike the Japanese and probably the Chinese too.

But still none of the countries in East Asia let that stop them from trading with eachother. European Union is another example, where we have historic enemies and competitors now operating with open borders and free market.

Only South Asian countries play petty zero-sum games.

After seeing Mr. Yunus's photo I am getting flashbacks of Biden's debate performance.
I hope Mr. Yunus does better for Bangladesh.

Despite all there efforts and billions spent on propaganda BAL failed to brainwash people.

As did the BNP and Jamat before it.

I hope political parties learn a lesson - Bangladeshis cannot be brainwashed.

Everything fell apart once Hasina boarded the helicopter destined for Kolkata.

In India Modi is trying the same experiment in India.

Not sure whether he will succeed either.

But many will die in the process!

This is so confusing and confirmation bias category on its own without context and not worthy of a separate half baked discussion - because there is a master thread on this I am merging it with it.
