The Zojila Tunnel Project, which aims to provide an all-year, all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Leh, is set to be Asia’s longest tunnel. Recently, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari gave an update on the progress of the project.

Gadkari told the Lok Sabha that the project is over 50% complete.

The Zojila Tunnel Project includes the construction of a 13.153 km tunnel, along with 17.030 km of approach roads, resulting in a total length of 30.18 km, Gadkari added. He further said that total Project cost (TPC) of the Project is Rs. 6,809.69 crore. The project is scheduled for completion by September 29, 2026.

Lok Sabha MP Mian Altaf Ahmad had inquired about the details, current status, and total cost of the project. On the subject of the project was helping locals get employment, Gadkari replied that 1,043 locals have been employed by the supervising consultant, contractor and sub-contractor.

Zojila Tunnel Project

Once it has been completed, The Zojila tunnel will become India’s longest road tunnel and is expected to be Asia’s longest bi-directional tunnel, with a length of 14.15 km.

Besides seamless connectivity, the tunnel also promises to significantly cut travel time between Kashmir and Ladakh. The current distance from Baltal to Minamarg, which is 40 km, will be shortened to 13 km, cutting travel time by an estimated hour and a half.

The terrain around Zojila Pass is notoriously challenging, with numerous fatal accidents occurring each year. Upon completion of the tunnel project, the likelihood of accidents is expected to decrease significantly.

I presume in case of another Kargil type incursion the Indian Army can get their supplies in winter via the tunnel.

Is my understanding correct ?

One of the best period for North East states and Kashmir under Modi government.

Previously Congress ignored those states in past years.

Almost no development works done.

yes, and also all round connectivity. Previously many roads got cut off in winters. Now on problems.

You can look at this video for how a similar project impacted people

We've already accomplished this through the Manali-Leh route via Darcha and Nimmu on the Kargil-Leh Highway. The Zojila Tunnel is just an added bonus.

Correct and incase of Chinese incursion, quickly transfer troops from LoC to LAC and vice versa.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari outlines an ambitious infrastructure plan transforming Jammu & Kashmir's connectivity. With the completion of 27 tunnels, including the remarkable Atal Tunnel that reduces travel time to Rohtang Pass from 3.5 hours to just 8 minutes, the region is set for unprecedented access. The ongoing Zoji-la Tunnel, Asia's largest at 13.15 km, and the proposed 18 tunnels from Srinagar to Jammu will further enhance travel efficiency. This development will enable travel from Delhi to Amritsar in 4 hours, and to Srinagar in just 8 hours, paving the way for better integration and economic growth in the region.

Since 50% is already complete and timeline is 5 years I guess by late 2026 or early 2027 we can expect....
Officials said that about 60 to 70 percent of the tunnelling work had been completed which includes excavation work, construction of bridges and roads besides a few mini tunnels ahead of the main Zojila Tunnel.
