What that sidesteps entirely is that what is good for Modi is not good for the country. We have enough complaints about his domestic policies, of course, these being sounds that do not reach the ears of the bhakt. Look at what he has done on the international front with the assistance of his sycophantic external affairs minister. It's not like the Maldives situation didn't exist or Modi created the situation. He just posted a few selfies as usual and exploited an existing situation in his favour. If I have a million dollars, I would surely bet on him.
Leaving aside the sorry roll-call of the countries where the reputation of India has steadily declined, while his own personal profile has been increasingly magnified, take this case of the Maldives.
What good does it do India to push around a country that was generally supportive until the perception began in the country that India was an odious bully? Was that perception due to nursing by either the Islamist ISIS or by the concerted efforts of the ISI of Pakistan to set that entire community against us?
There too the question is of how India should be taking out. If the voting figures mean anything, that campaign of vilification had only partial impact, and was reflected in a precariously poised victory for the forces that were hostile to India.
Would you, in these circumstances where the party that would have been for India was hovering on the edge of public support, have then created such a huge ruckus? Would an intelligent man not avoided the short-term solution of a cunning man, and held his tongue and continued to keep a low profile?
