Indonesian language on the buiding name "Kantor Walikota" which means City Mayor Office. Kota in Indonesia means city.

Kantor comes from Dutch word
Wali from Arabic which is pretty similar like Head or Manager in English

Will Indonesia fall back to its 2006(?) pillaging, killing, and raping ethnic Chinese or another minority? It was about the same period Indonesia waged a ethnic killing war in another island that eventually got Australia intervened militarily. I'm not sure if these killing incidents could be blamed on extremism because they had happened numerous times in Indonesia's short history. Perhaps this is due to its failed ethnic policies including ethnic cleansing minorities' cultural identities (I'd met quite a few immigrants from Indonesia saying they couldn't keep their last names, not of course their languages). Is the ethnic hatred still there? Is it related to religions?

The 1998 May you mean ? It is a chaos and yes there is a vandalism to Chinese ethnic business because they are seen as backing Soeharto regime, but blaming all Indonesian native to do that is just plain stupid. The vandalism done by criminals and tugs that take advantage of 1998 event when people get angry after several university students get shot during demonstration anti Soeharto in Trisakti University.
No, there is no Australia intervention in East Timor. It is UN mission the same like Indonesia military operation in Lebanon. UN mission for making security effort after East Timor election. Why East Timor can have elaction to determine their own fate ? It is because Indonesia is embargoed by all Western nations, USA and European nation. We invaded that country in 1977 and fight insurgency level since then with them. 99 % Catholic country with Western backing after USSR collapse. During that time we also get huge economic crisis.
The reason we invaded that country is also due to cold war where frerilin during that time was a lefthis organization and Indonesia has been seen as fighting communist in the region, particularly in our neigboring country Malaysia ( Soeharto help Malaysia fight their communist insurgency in Serawak Borneo Island) and also East Timor.
Australia see Indonesia as their threat, that small population country dont dare to do things like intervening things.

You don't call a pillage that had 400+ ethnic Chinese women and young girl raped, 1000+ people killed, and thousands of businesses and home owned by ethnic Chinese burned a chaos and vandalism. No, I did not read this or hear this as rumors. When I was scanning thru your postings of how Indonesia is great, I remembered the pictures I saw back in the days (I thought it was around 2006 but clearly I was wrong). The pictures' images are still in my head, much like the WWII pictures of Japanese soldiers bayonetting a baby thrown in the mid air, and they're of women's bodies naked and in blood lying on the floor.
Thanks to you I looked it up and found those numbers I posted above and that 2-day massacre is still a taboo subject in Indonesia. Some years back I asked a Chinese Indonesian about that incident. He changed the subject and didn't want to talk about it. To these days, no one was held accountable for the brutalities and no effort by the current or past administrations to pursue justice.

1000 deaths are native death when a mall is burn when some people tried to loot a mall. That was chaost and it is more on anti Soeharto riots. Criminals and tugs took advantage as always in any riots happening around the world.
You can still googling the news abouth that 1000 death in mall. 1000 deaths are looters, 99 % if not all are native. See many building are being burn during those chaost and riots
