Fair enough. You have more faith in the average Turkish citizens than me. While I think Erdogan echoes the sentiments on the street with his bombastic talk, to walk the talk is not only too much to ask for from either Erdogan or the Turkish population.
Turkey is still supplying oil to Israel, right? Still part of an alliance which is targeting Bashar Assad, which has the potential to choke the strategically vital supplies to Hezbollah. And Turkey is still hoping for an EU membership. Plus, many Turks have this 'cop out' attitude bringing up the so-called Arab Betrayal to the Ottoman empire to justify their lack of robust support to the Palestinians.
No! No country can be the leader of the lslamic world while also being a slave to the Christian+Jewish + White western nations. This is where Turkey, Egypt, the Saudis (to a degree) fall short and self -disqualify themselves from being actual leaders of the Islamic world, so no, Turkey becoming an Islamic world leader is an unrealistic hypothetical and a dream! But as I see it: Turkey had/has a chance to become a true leader of the Islamic world if it put its neck out for the Palestinians in the last one year.
Some of the population definitely has, but i understand your general point. biggest reposibility still falls on the govt, not the people, and Turkey's govt has chosen to be a legal "co-D"! co-defendant/Israeli crimes facilitator, in Israel's eventual war crimes trial.I don't think their leadership or even the population has grasped the historic opportunity and thus,
Turkey's main vulnerability seems to be its economy and resources-its low on them, while having large demand for them for internal and trade purposes. There is a good chance the Ukraine war leads to a split up of NATO, and in such case, Turkey could be back more or less being on its own, and it sort of is that way now for all intents and purposes- how many troops could NATO send Turkey when Turkey is one of NATOs top 3 member countries in terms of size of ground forces.unless they change course, they will remain a middling power into the foreseeable future. Well, their country, their choice.
