Bangladesh Economy

It is
But i think its a pity young jobless bangladeshis have to go to Gulf for a job that fosent pay too well. When BD could have had manufacturing and service sector to provide those jobs.

Too many incompentent politcians and administration personell. But hopefully this is avout to change.

Bangladesh has a huge population and it won't be possible to employ everyone in domestic sector. We will need to make a name for ourselves in providing skilled labor abroad, just like Indians have captured the global outsourcing market.

We need to send skilled workers abroad so that they can earn higher. Right now we send the lowest skilled workers. We can look at how countries like Philippines made a name for themselves with skilled expat workers globally. So it is important that govt takes initiatives to make it easy for people to get trained and then avail jobs abroad. Govt must do the heavy lifting.

No as each BD textile factory employs many thousands of people.

Some can go as high as 5000 workers each.

UP does not have the vertical integration that BD has and there is no way it can replace the lost output of these factories without multiple years of government supported investments.

Anyway BEXIMCO is not just a textile park as it has other industries like pharma and light electronics.

Beximco conglomerate a money laundering machine, will be disintegrated and its companies will be sold to other conglomerates without any jobloss.
.
And under interim Yunus administration instead of decline our export is going up. He is doing exceptionally well considering we had a devastating revolution just 4 months back.

.
And as expected fake news from the worlds fake news factory. 🙂

Anybody knows why our import is down while export is up compared to previous fiscal year?

Most probably due to massive efforts made by AL to shrink imports to the absolute essentials.
Maybe the IG also did a few things as well.
Anyway this is good news for a forex starved BD.

CHATTOGRAM, Jan 01: Chittagong Port, the country's prime seaport, has set new records for container and cargo handling in 2024, underscoring the resilience of the nation's maritime sector despite challenges over the past year.

According to the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA), the port handled 3.27 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) of containers and handled 123 million tonnes of cargo in the calendar year, marking significant growth compared to the previous year.

The port witnessed a 7.42 per cent increase in container handling and a 3.11 per cent rise in cargo handling, compared to 2023, signaling a positive trend for the nation's trade.

The number of ships docked at Chittagong Port also reached a high of 3,867 in 2024, further highlighting the port's crucial role in Bangladesh's economy.

CPA Chairman Rear Admiral SM Moniruzzaman said that 2024 marked the highest-ever container and cargo volumes at the port. From January 1 to December 31, 2024, a total of 32,75,627 TEUs of containers and 12,39,86,014 tonnes of cargo were handled.

The port also saw notable improvements in operational efficiency, with the average waiting time for ships at the outer anchorage has come down to just one day, he said.

On the financial front, Chittagong Port achieved a revenue income of over Tk 50.55 billion in 2024, marking a 21.39 per cent increase from the previous year's revenue of Tk 41.65 billion. The port's revenue surplus also rose by 37 per cent to Tk 29.48 billion, up from Tk 21.43 billion in 2023.

Omar Faruk, Secretary to the CPA, said, "The handling of containers and cargo increased last year. Besides, the CPA also decreased the costs of maintenance in a year. Besides, Chittagong port also obtained the 64th position among the 100 ports of the world."

Chittagong Port handles more than 92 per cent of the export and import cargoes of Bangladesh.

One of the objective measurements of the fact that economy is picking up the pace. IG has turned around Chittagong Port's management. Now Ships only wait 1-2 days compared to 5-6 days during previous regime.

@UKBengali seems like a lot of boast for a measly 3.11% increase in cargo handling?

Must be one of the lowest incremental growth over the last decade?

If it grows at this pace then BD economy is buggered!!!

Lol, @Joe Shearer won't participate in your circlejerk. You couldn't be more pathetically biased even if you wanted to. At least we are seeing growth now for the first time in 3 years. Under previous regime it was declining on year to year basis in 2022, 2023. (While they were busy making up fake GDP numbers)

"Annual container handling at the country's premier sea port of Chattogram decreased 2.54 per cent year-on-year in the just concluded calendar year of 2022 owing to a downward trend in foreign trade."

"In 2023, Chattogram Port handled 30,50,793 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units), a slight decrease from the 31,42,504 TEUs handled in 2022. This represents a 2.9% decline in container handling year-on-year."
