No H-20 will be strategic bomber not fighter bomber like B-2, fighter bomber will be regional JH-XXfighter bomber will be Xian H-20
The news came so suddenly today, it took everyone by surprise. I didn't have time to think about it.@Michael based on images, videos seen, whats your assessment on how far the design is developed. They are likely leveraging experience from J20, even J35. Although first look of this, if we assumed the CAC prototype is selected we are still looking at what a decade to refine design, for matured systems, engines and infrastructure in place and then another 5 to 10 years for mass production?
The US has been flying NGAD prototypes since 2020, with three different demonstrators from Lockheed, Boeing, and NG.
Where do you see 3rd engine? It's clearly have 2 engineslook at the clear image of Chengdu's J-XX, it seems that it may really has 3 engines just like rumors suggested.
The technologies and capabilities both competitors for NGAD — widely expected to be Boeing and Lockheed Martin — are proposing are “incredible,” Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Dave Allvin said Dec. 7. But before the service commits itself to a course, he said, it has to make sure it’s moving in the right direction.

Under Trump, decision on Air Force’s NGAD will shape fleet for decades
The Air Force struggled for much of 2024 to figure out how — and even whether — to proceed with its planned sixth-generation fighter.www.defensenews.com
It’s expensive because it hosts the most advanced fighter technology ever developed.
I am just waiting how the Indians will react to this news.
Yes but its the fast catch-up that will have Americans in sweats.
F-22 flew in 1997 and J-20 did not fly till 2020. Gap of 13 years has now been shrunk down to just 4.
You’re assuming China has access to the same technology the US has. An F-22/F-35 is not equal to a J-20.
This is Chinas version of a 6th gen fighter, if that’s their intention. The USAF version will be much more advanced.
Sorry I just corrected my first flight of J-20 to 2010 but you probably noticed.
J-20 is far superior even with its WS-10C current engine than F-35 which is not really a 5th generation fighter.
Upgraded F-22 may just have an advantage over J-20 though but no-one knows for sure.
Now it is not helping the US to keep downplaying Chinese tech as it means when the punch lands, it is going to hurt more than if you were prepared for it.
“China has been pursuing aircraft technology, but they are not a match for the United States,” he continued. “We are ahead in aircraft technology. The J-20, which is their most recent fighter, is not as good as the F-35, which is our most recent fighter. The Next-Generation Air Dominance fighter … is going to be better than anything I think China can do. We’re ahead in areas like engine technology substantially. And our access to advanced computational capability gives us an edge as well.”

“I don’t think that it’s a dominating aircraft at this point, compared to what we have [in terms of stealthy F-22 Raptors and F-35 Lightnings],” Wilsbach highlighted. “They’ve done some good copying… pretty much most of the technology from that airplane [the J-20] was stolen from the U.S.”
As Wilsbach himself indicated, his most recent assessment of the J-20 is broadly in line with the comments he made at the 2022 iteration of the Air & Space Forces Association’s annual symposium. At that event, the general noted how J-20s “weren’t anything to lose a lot of sleep over,” but that, “Certainly, we’re watching them [China] closely and seeing how they… operate them.” This viewpoint was supported by Air Force Chief of Staff General Charles Q. Brown, who was also speaking at the 2022 symposium: “Well, I’m like General Wilsbach… [The J-20 is] not something to lose a lot of sleep over, but I’m gonna pay attention to it.”

China's J-20 Isn't A "Dominating Aircraft," USAF General Says

The US Air Force has a completely different assessment of the J-20.
