Israel raids Iranian missile facility in Syria in covert operation

Israel raided an Iranian missile facility in Syria in September, targeting sites run by the Syrian defense ministry and Iranian forces to prevent weapons production for Hezbollah.

Israel conducted a commando raid on an underground Iranian missile production facility near the city of Maysaf in Syria in early September, the Jerusalem Post learned in later September, but was only allowed to confirm now after KAN News was permitted to publicize the IDF officially taking credit late Sunday.

That a raid took place, but without Israeli confirmation, was first reported by Axios on September 12, with the Post receiving secret confirmation shortly after, but not permission to publicize the information.

It appears that Israeli censor and secrecy rules regarding operations in Syria have become more flexible given the huge increase in IDF operations in Syria since the fall of the Assad regime.

With the fall of the regime, information security officials likely view any threat of retaliation from Syria as being at a much lower risk level.

The raid targeted two significant sites, which were the Syrian defense industry's Scientific Studies and Research Center and the underground missile production facility run by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps.

Israel, which had followed the facility for years, had informed the United States about the operation in advance.

The IDF prepared its operational plans after it detected that Iran had transferred components for a precision missile project into the facility. Israel then decided to address the "growing threat."

Concerns about Iranian missiles

The decision to carry out the strike was believed to be influenced by concerns over the ongoing war, along with the potential risk that the Iranian missile factory would begin mass-producing missiles.

The aforementioned weapons were reportedly intended to be used as a supply for Hezbollah.

The operation occurred approximately 200 kilometers from Israeli territory and was deemed urgent to prevent the facility from reaching full production capacity.

The remaining few Jews in Syria are now able to visit the Jobar Synagogue, one of the oldest synagogues in the world, after the fall of Bashar al-Assad earlier this month.

The synagogue, located in the Jobar suburb of Damascus, was partially destroyed during the Syrian Civil War, the Associated Press reported on Monday. The area was heavily restricted by Assad’s forces from 2018 until just a few weeks ago.

Syria only has nine Jewish people remaining in the country, the head of the Syrian Jewish community, Bakhour Chamntoub, told the AP.

Chamntoub, 74, took reporters with him for his first visit in 15 years.

“This synagogue means a lot to us,” he told reporters.

Upon returning to the site, however, the head of Syria’s Jewish community was shocked by the state the synagogues were left in.

“I am frankly disturbed,” he told the AP.

He recalled Torah scrolls made on antelope leather, rich tapestries, and chandeliers. He believes looters have taken it all.

Historic Jewish landmark

The temple, also known as Eliyahu Hanavi Synagogue, was reportedly built atop a cave that, legend has it, was used by the prophet Elijah to hide from persecution from King Ahab. It’s believed that Elijah’s successor, the prophet Elisha, built the synagogue around 720 BCE.

Chamntoub stayed in Syria during the 13 active years of the civil war while all 12 of his siblings left. He told the AP that he never incurred discrimination in Syria but added that others prefer not to speak out in the same way he does for safety reasons. He told the AP that he was contacted by Jewish people from around the world looking to help.

Syrian Jews believe no Jews will remain in the country within the next few years; there were around 100,000 Jews in Syria at the start of the 20th century. Much of the community left for the US or Israel around 1948 following Israel’s creation and the tensions and restrictions that followed.

Chamntoub told the AP he hopes Syrians will see more freedom in all areas of life after Assad’s fall. He noted that before the fall of the regime, he had been unable to give interviews to the media without state clearance. “I am a Jew, and I am proud of it,” he told the AP.

The Zionists are still not being resisted by a single HTS "soldier" as they walk into village after village in SW Syria.

The Jolani regime even says they want "friendship" with the Zionist entity even as it bombs and takes more Syrian territory.

You cannot make this crap up. 🤡

I am keeping a close eye on the map below and the areas being occupied by the entity in purple gets larger with each passing day. It is obvious they want the large parts of the SW region next to Golan.

You will be wasting your time and you will be disappointed when Israel doesn´t move further from the buffer and retreats post winter..

You really think there is no deconfliction between them and previous understanding on the buffer otherwise they would have engaged long time ago

The only reasonable step in this situation would be to lay down arms, end secessionist ambitions, and embrace the idea of being equal Syrian citizens. However, it is likely that the PKK will not accept disarmament, or they may retreat to Kandil. In my view, the Turkish authorities have handled this issue in a fairly effective way. It is noteworthy that a significant portion of the Syrian government team has close ties to Turkey, and many of its members even hold Turkish citizenship.
