Bangladesh Economy

@UKBengali

Walton and BD garment manufacturers can build hundreds of factories in India in order to satisfy "Made in India".

I would welcome such investment for sure.

Eastern and NE India are right destinations for BD's investments in the garmenting industry. People are poor here and wage rates are low. The only problem is poor infra, indifferent law and order and the generally business unfriendly atmosphere.

Regards

Yep! BD factories in NE would enjoy great supply chain and easy access to a port.

Something the banya community cannot provide to NE.

This is inevitable!

@LeonBlack08

BD needs energy and if US companies provide LNG at remunerative rates, it should be welcome.

Regards

US petro chemical companies are notorious for corruption and scamming.

Just look at the destruction in Africa and South America.

IG will sign lots of damaging deals to mollify Trump.

Which will become an albatross round its neck.

And the opponents wouldn’t have to lie about things like the “price of coal” lol

LNG is notorious for price fluctuations - something the U.K. and Germany is learning to their cost. Whilst nuclear France avoided the pain of energy crisis.

BD can set up factories next to BD in Assam which would have a huge amount of workforce that could be employed there.

Infrastructure would be minimal and power lines can even be connected to the BD grid if necessary.

These goods can then be sent via the excellent infrastructure in BD to other parts of India, keeping the "Made in India" label.

@SoulSpokesman BD is key to industrialisation of NE.

Once the current Khaki backed IG has exhausted itself - we can resume the great task of building BD and NE.

Kola bhai,

BD is key to industrialisation of NE.

Correct, although I would qualify it by saying industrialisation of Assam. The other hilly states shouldnt follow an industrial path of development. They should be developed for tourism and IT/ITES (as they have high literacy levels and are proficient in English)

Well, it is not fair to write off the IG so quickly. Let us give them some time to show what their actual economic policies and vision are. I will not make too much of the slowdown in tax collection in the Jul-Dec period as there was too much chaos in the whole society.

Hasina has done enough in terms of infrastructure and setting up BD on the path of industrialisation that unless the IG were intent on destroying the BD economy, things will run along ok anyway.

They just need to not hinder the projects that are either in construction or already approved and things will be just fine.

Name one Khaki backed regime that has succeeded.

Anywhere in the world!

Why would it be different in BD and it hasn’t to date.

Khaki mindset is very regimental and about reacting to events.

You cannot run a country by being a reactionary.

Khaki structure also works on deference - another weakness!

That kind of mindset cannot run a state in the post “western rules based order”.

Feasibility studies for much of the infrastructure projects were not done properly which translates into little economic value relative to the cost of the projects.

Give me a single example of a major infrastructure project that you think is pointless.

Things like roads and bridges usually do not need a "feasibility" study as the need would be there for many years if not decades.

Yes! BAL shouldn’t have built the Jamuna and Padma bridges - should have left a third of the population stranded lol

Should have used that money to buy some tanks to chest thump against Sanghis lol

@BananaRepublic

At this rate it will take around 30 years to pay the cost of building the bridge off.

Taka 838.56 cr toll collected from Padma Bridge in 2024

Bangladesh Bridge Authority (BBA) has earned highest toll of Taka 838.56 crore from Padma Bridge in 2024.

Executive Engineer of Padma Multipurpose Bridge Abu Saad Niloy told BSS that the toll was collected from 67,36,478 vehicles.

Since opening of the 6.15-km bridge for traffic on June 25, 2022, BBA earned total Taka 2,061.97 crore from 1,58,08,968 vehicles, he said.

BBA has so far paid Taka 1,577.16 crore in 10 installments to the Finance Division for repayment of the loan given by the government for construction of the mega project.

The Bridges Division on April 5, 2023 began repaying the loan that it had taken as credit for the Padma Bridge construction from the revenue.

“We usually pay four installments per financial year to the government and Taka 157.71 crore is given in every installment.

According to the BBA, highest toll collection in a single day was Taka 4.80 crore on June 14, 2024 when record number of 44,033 vehicles crossed the bridge.

In the backdrop of withdrawal of the World Bank and other multilateral financial institutions from financing, the government has built the Padma Bridge with its own resources at a total cost of Taka 30,193 crore.

Out of that money, the government provided a grant of Taka 300 crore while remaining Taka 29,893 crore was given as credit at one percent interest rate to BBA.

As per that agreement with the Finance Division on 29 August 2019, BBA will repay the loan in 35 years in 140 installments.

According to the payment schedule, minimum Taka 634 crore to maximum Taka 1,475 crore should be paid every fiscal.

How many thousands used to be killed - making the crossing on overcrowded crafts. And in dangerous weather.

The arduous journey for the sick - going to the various hospitals in Dhaka.

Only Hasina understood this pain amongst the political elite.

Most of them don’t care about the sufferings of average person - as long as they can buy tanks to chest thump against Sanghis!

@SoulSpokesman looks like next BAL government will have to clear up a lot of mess!

Not just "chest thumping" but the infrastructure was built by Hasina/AL as well is a pain point for them.

Padma Bridge now opens up the markets of Dhaka to farmers in SW BD to easily tranport their fresh produce for sale.

One-liners like "no feasibility studies done" but when you ask them to expand further, they disappear.

Lol

One liners they got from a tweet or YouTube clip lol or a mullah speech

Yes! It grates them that Hasina built them.

Like it grates Sanghis that Muslims built great stuff like the Taj Mahal lol

Great political leaders know that infrastructure and monuments are the symbol of their rule.

It’s literally a rebuff to the haters!
