DeepSeek, China's AI model: News & Discussion

from what I see the chinese use a different approach to problems than the americans.
let’s say you have a math equation you can do brute force or you do the smart way.
brute force requires lots of resources, lots of money. smart way uses instincts and learned experiences.
given a, what is b, what is c?
a, b, c belong to N.

AI itself is the brute force way of solve problems, inefficient but easy for a large kind of problems.

Anyway I think it's not a ethnicity problem, but a economic system of lies in USA.

There is no Chinese engineers in USA enough to make 6 mn USD company in USA soil and do the same that did DeepSeek? But it only could happen in Chinese soil, because USA 'free market' is a lie, big tech companies are well controlled by the same single state under a fake face of entrepreneurship and free competence.

keep your breath

that’s not capitalism vs communism.

what happens is some chinese engineers have found a more efficient model to solve problems. if that model was developed in Israel, the buzz would be less on the market. now people get panic when anyone shouts “China” in the public.

given US restrictions on advanced chips the chinese certainly have more motivations to develop something that costs less, requires less energy, resources.

Just tested Kimi.ai.

It's not as good as DeepSeek.

it seems capitalism vs communism to me, but in the opposite sense you think.

here the capitalist side seems to be China, with real entrepreneurs.
And the communist state-controlled side seems to be USA big tech companies, with a lot of lies to be seen like capitalist. With all well controlled, with regulations to remove rivals, no economic freedom, no freedom at all, just lies.

I repeat the question:
there are thousands Chinese engineers in USA
there are billions invested in AI companies in USA
Why not a single one 6 mn dollar company in USA has do the same? (with Chinese, or the ethnicity/culture you want, USA is plenty of all).

6 mn USD is pocket change for that sector in USA.

It's not a cultural/ethnical problem.

And I think you're wrong when you see these discoveries as the brilliant idea of single one person, science/technology doesnt work that way, usually when people with same knowledge works in solve same problems, they achieve similar conclusions (a lot of science theories have dual-names of two separated groups of people working in the same problem and achieving the same result at the same time)

It's a economic system problem.

USA capitalism is a farce.
USA big tech companies are well controlled by the same entity: USA deep state. No real competence, no real entrepreneurship, just lies, lies and lies.

LIES is the word that better define USA empire.

USA lies ad-nauseam.

They have destroyed America’s AI companies.

Chips is next.

No they haven’t, not even close. R1 is not even up to o1 capability, and o3 far exceeds it.

it’s a number game.

in Vietnam we have a joke: if the chinese want to kill us they just need to line up the border and….pee. we will be drown.

joke aside, 1.5 million chinese engineers leave every years the universities in China. what makes the difference of few thousand chinese engineers in the US? not much.
about that crazy valuations of Nvida and others, I never understand. but that’s capitalism.

Hold on.

So now you are saying that US has unlimited money and manufacturing capabilty to exceed the 20x superior efficiency of China as proven by Deepseek?

Once those Ascend 910Cs are being pumped out in the 10s of thousands per month by SMIC later on this year, expect another "surprise" soon afterwards from Deepseek and other Chinese AI companies that shows up Google and OpenAI for the mediocrity they really are.

That’s purely hypothetical, meanwhile o3 is done while its successor is being trained now.

DeepSeek spent 6 millions dollar to prove as a lie the USA AI power consumption and that moved billions in stocks markets when investments firms saw the deception.

What can do USA tech companies with 6 millions dollar?

How can a 6 millions USD company beat a billions dollar company? Because the billions company is a lie and has no real rivals due to regulations and a fake captive market.

No one but the ignorant and Chinese sycophants believe Deepseek spent only $6M. Even Elon laughs at that figure.

Deepseek can’t openly admit the true price, because they illegally used 50K+ H100s to train R1.

Is really funny seeing american tech bosses scrambling to say how bad R1 is, how they used 50,000 Nvidia H100's to train it, they are creating fake news to cope with this ownage they are experiencing. Then you have the usual China security issue scare mongering to block competition.

R1 has wiped the floor with all available models today, it took 3months to train at a cost of $5.6m which equates to 200 H100's, likely they used H800s. What tops it, the company that did this is a hedge fund and this was a side project!

All these twitter posts are people struggling to accept reality. I have tested both o1 and R1 and can say R1 is neck on neck with most tasks I want it to do vs o1. I don't use it for general knowledge searching but for coding and other intensive activities. You dont need to take my word for it check all the other techies and developers who have tested it.

I mean for god sake you can install a 1.5bn parameter version of it on a mobile phone! yes 1.5bn is not great but it shows how they have made the models so flexible.

This should be no suprise really BBC published an article recently stating 6,000 PhDs in STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) coming out of Chinese universities every month vs 2-3k in US, 1.5k in UK. 2023 China filed 1.7m patents, vs 600k for the US.

Practically every major American AI CEO has said it. VP of R&D at TSMC also believes Deepseek illegally used it. Unfortunately her X account was deleted. Probably too much info released

The Chinese use front companies out of Singapore, Vietnam etc

Who cares about Elon. Fact remains that China has jolted the US tech companies.
