For anyone trying to learn how to use a Chinese dictionary using old school Radical and Stroke count method (the most surefire method when you are new to the language), should know that unlike english there are 200+ Radicals or fundamental-symbols that are used to index the dictionary. To look up the meaning of a charecter you have to deduce the radical of a character and the count strokes in that charecter and then you can go and look up the dictionary. Its arduous task.

Radicals and stroke counts are arbirary and historical in nature.

Look at English - it was a peasant’s language until the 17th century.

English aristocracy spoke Latin and French till then.

Translation of the bible to English was also a key driver.

English only took off in the 18th century and went through meticulous refinement in the latter half of the 18th century.

Chinese never went through refinement.

The ruling class spoke Urdu and English in Bengal.

Tagore and co made Bengali the language of the gentry in first half of 20th century.

Chinese language used today is everyday common peoples spoken words or conversations. It went through profound transformation of the Chinese language system in the early 20th century in what is called modernization. Chinese language evovled slowly more than thousands of years before 20 th century. Chinese is not English, and doesnt have to follow the exact path of English.

Then dont learn it, no Chinese ask you to, learn Korean then or something.

English has already taken over the world and there is no going back.

I bet that the people were thinking the same about French being the lingua franca in 19th century, but it changed. We dont know what will happen in the future. But I agree that the Chinese can never be a world language. Its just too hard. The same goes for Korean and Japanese. The graduate rate with these languages in Bulgaria on a university level is less than 20%., its too difficult.

To understand what learning Chinese means....

一 (this is a one stroke character)
刀 (this is a two stroke charecter)
口 (this is three stroke)
水 (this is five stroke)

Now why 刀 is two and 口 is three? Historical reasons.
And why 刀 is two but 水 is five? Again, if you write 水 properly you will have to lift the brush five times.... What is proper? Historically defined.

And yes to learn Chinese properly, you need to internalize this information. For 3000 symbols.

Thats the point! Learning english requires 26 symbols and their juxtaposition. Learning Chinese requires learning 3000 symbols.

Imagine a world in which computer keyboard was developed straight from Chinese without any english and input method editor.

I once learnt how to use Japanese dictionary for Kanji. It was so god damn hard and stupid. You have to understand which "radical" or part of Kanji (Chinese characters stolen by Japanese) make other Kanji so you can look up the dictionary. Its hard as hell!

If you come across a charecter and you do not even know how to pronounce it, you have to rely on radical approach to look into its meaning in dictionary. And radical approach is just plain stupid and arbitrary. Then there is stroke counts. And that is completely arbitrary as well. What makes one stroke or two is an arbitrary convention based on history.

With english, so long you know 26 letters and the A B C D sequence, you are all set to used dictionary! No one even tought me how to use a dictionary and I learnt it by age of 6.

How many distinct English words you have to learn before you are proficient in the language. You dont have to make all the excuses if you or others dont want to learn Chinese, its fine with me.

I had to learn about 500 words or so. But thats beyond point! If I come across a new word, I will crack open my dictionary and will find its meaning in less than 15 seconds.

For Chinese, I will need to learn atleast 200+ radicals, how to count stroke orders and how to deduce radicals before I can use the dictionary.

It is HARD!

There are indians who are angry they have to learn Hindi. Good luck teaching Chinese to the most populous country in the world. They might be willing to learn if China creates an H1-B program for them...
