Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have unveiled new missile systems on three strategic islands in the Gulf: Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb, and Abu Musa. I think the JF17 Block 3 with IFR would be great cheap and high quality for Iran

Thunder would be an absolute flop with IRIAF because It's not a stand alone fighter.
IAF can eat it up any day anytime with its F16s & F15s let alone F35.

JF-17 falls into the light fighter category, suitable for small geography or QRA interceptions on borders. It has limited hardpoints, MTOW and combat range. Inducting it will severely limit Iran's ability to conduct extended operations or long range interceptions deep into Iraqi airspace or across the Persian Gulf. To make an effective fleet out of this fighter, Iran will need atleast 250 of them (Current need is ~150 airframes of twin engined air-superiority MRCA like SU-35/30SM/J-16).

Another factor is tech ownership. All major components of the JF-17 engine, radar, avionics, combat suite originate from China (or Russia for RD-93 Turbofan run versions). Will China or Russia (in case of RD-93) allow Pakistan to transfer these TOT or CKDs to Iran? If they do so then why cant Iran get J-16 (if its for sale) or J-10 from China directly? What about US, EU, PGCC pressure on economically hurt Pakistan.
Adopting the JF-17 would simply repeat IIAF historical mistake of bulk induction of F-5 that IRIAF felt in Iran-Baathist war. These things would fly interception CAPs at best while F-14 and F-4 fleet was fighting the major war.

Russia doesn't love Iran, as Irán doesn't love Russia. They're brothers of misery. Irán is the soft belly of Russia, a Highway to reach south asia without having to cross NATO or Japan/South Korea (US partners). Ukraine deal won't change that much. Iran lost its entire Transcaucasia including Azerbaijan, Armenia etc to Russia just two centuries ago. These Azerbaijanis, recent "Torks", from republic did not leave Iran, they were stolen from Iran by Czar Russia, locals fought like hell to resist. Just 7 decades ago, had their been no direct US threat, Stalin would have chunked out entire North West of Iran. Royalist fools try to take credit for getting back the Russian stolen provinces. This Islamo-marxist revolution in Iran has its roots in USSR pushed socialism in Iran, Mullahs came later into the leftist mix. Iran and Russia have always been passive aggressive rivals. For the first and probably the last time their goals aligned in Syrian Civil war.

Only a fraction of Indo-Russian trade happens through INSTC through Iran. Barely 8-10% of 66 BLN USD. Russia has a ~100 Billion USD with Jew controlled EU, It has booming ties with AIPAC controlled Republican US, historically it has shown genuine concerns over Nuclear armed Iran (2009 sanctions). You think Russia will let go all of that for sake of 10 Billion USD worth INSTC trade?

Iran Government is not dumb. The Regime has survived a total war against Irak, and a draconian isolation that no other country in the area would do. And if you don't believe that fact you should admit that there are much more dumb governments in the área than Iran. Starting with Israel (Netanyahu won't step back EU or even Russia or China for the rest of his life) and Syria is showing that not only Assad was dumb also Jolani is.

You do realize Iran was projected to have a 3-4 trillion USD GDP in 2010s considering its worlds 2nd largest Hydrocarbon reserves? A great power in Japan, South Korea, Germany, France category with tough military, industry, economy. Now its GDP is barely above Bankrupt/Debt run Pakistan. Remove the sanctions today and the GDP will move to that figure naturally but Iranian government wants to fight US/NATO, Israel for Sunni Arabs who hate Iran. With that much GDP and talent of Iranian nation (our STEM outputs, grads, R&D) the industry and defence sector will rise to great power status. Thats what Iranian "Government" is doing. Our GDP is halved or even below that due to sanctions, country is short on USD for imports, energy giant nation is facing power shortages in cities, government has to pull smuggling stunts and rely upon local knock offs to keep its military intact. Thats some strategy right there.

F-14 and MIG-29 are datalinked. Add that to the list, there are 4 (same or different ?) Search-Track Double Duplex datalinking systems operating in Iranian military right now:

- IADS (strongest and dynamic between Search and OTH assets, Track Batteries Active/Passive sensors including AESA/PESA radars, then HIMADS/SHORADS).

- The IAIO MUM-T (Kowsar-UCAVS, they recently showed Kaman-12 operating with Dowran upgraded F-4E/D in a MUMT like role). Mind you, Iranian UCAV fleet is large but IRIAF only uses handful of designs such as Kaman-12/22, Mohajer-6 and Karrar in A2A role.

- IRGCAF (SU-22M3/M4 with IRGC UCAVs).

- IRIAF F-14(AM?) and MIG-29

The unilateral sanctions imposed by the United States on Iran have indeed had some impact on China-Iran bilateral trade. But it is mainly reflected in trade settlements, and it has less impact on actual China-Iran bilateral trade.

As for the military trade between China-Iran, the influence of the United States is completely negligible. It only depends on the willingness of the Chinese-Iranian parties to cooperate and international conventions (including, of course, the resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council). What is important in life cannot be measured in monetary terms and neither is everyone motivated my financial gains. If this was the case then nobody would left in Iran. The grass in not greener. It takes a while for those green card seeking Iranians to understand their mistake once they leave Iran but they eventually do. Westerners don't treat anyone equitable no matter how brilliant one may be.
Iran educates more than enough of the country's youth to provides engineering talent for the eventual completion of any and all projects.

Indeed. Iranian Americans earn more on average than even white americans or other european migrant groups. In Germany they are the most educated migrant group, much above Slavs, Turks, forget Arabs or other MENAS. With EU getting more industrialized this brain drain will enhance even further.

I wrote some time ago what happened to Bavar-373 early in its development phase when almost entire project bigwigs left the country. IRI is failing to get loyalty from its youths who see the system as corrupt, obsolete, suppressive and hypocritical. A top tier Iranian STEM grad can get 200K USD in North America while in Iran he will be paid in a currency that has lost its value like hell in past decade. He will be living in a country that can get into war with US/NATO/Israel any day for the sake of arabs and "principles". Then people ask why these projects like yasin, Kowsar, saeghe, besat, Karrar, Simorgh never get into serious mass productions. It is easy to churn out a prototype but for establishment of mass production line, government needs top people, not politically appointed loyal people.

Of course, you have to prove that your claim is true, because as far as I know, Iran's military projects are progressing and expanding well, as bavar 373.

Man this is irrational, rial is now 1 million to 1 usd. Iranians don't want to live like medieval peasants eating only rice and they don't owe loyalty to the losers who lost Syria and Lebanon in one year, crashed the economy, and are scared to build a nuclear bomb even though they made Iranians suffer 40 years of sanctions fr it. Iranians don't owe loyalty to losers and failures just like they didn't want to be loyal to the Shah. And good leaders don't make their people work for free.

It takes a while for those green card seeking Iranians to understand their mistake once they leave Iran but they eventually do.

And what is the rate of Iranian expatriates moving back to Iran permanently? Anecdotally do you know anyone who has? I don't. Most of those I know who have the means want to leave.

Westerners don't treat anyone equitable no matter how brilliant one may be.
