I'm cautiously optimistic with all this trade war noise, especially since it's mostly about goods, not services. India’s not a manufacturing powerhouse, but we're strong in services like IT, consulting, and BPO which aren’t directly hit by tariffs.

In fact, as companies rethink supply chains and look to cut costs, services might benefit. We're already seeing some increased shift towards India, and this could accelerate. So in a way, it might be a blessing in disguise, if we keep pushing reforms and improving infrastructure.

Probably not hard at all. Depends on what the value of the iPhone is in CA and MX and when you declare it at the border. The duty on the iPhone might be less than the tariff adjusted cost.

I don't believe there would be a duty on a used personal item. The border agents have no way of knowing when I bought the iPhone (assuming I wait long enough after its release to buy it) so why should I be expected to provide a purchase receipt? Are they going to require a purchase receipt for my shaver? my underwear?

Good point but remember, TSA has the right to inspect all electronics coming into the US. Questions might be asked if your phone does not have a SIM.

Just pointing out a hypothetical here.

They will ask you for invoice, had that once when I got back to Australia after a trip a couple of years ago when they ask for my phone. They look at the phone model (when they are made) as well, and if you can't show the document, or it's recent, they will charge you tax right then and there.

Think they (at least with Australian Custom) will ask you if you are carrying electronic over $1000
