Don't knew but I saw some hanger in Shiraz airport and they were not awe-inspiring

Hardened Bunkers are useless without pressurized blast doors. Just look at Syrian airbases. Leaving the front and back completely exposed means the PGM doesn’t even need to penetrate the bunker just land in front or behind and the shrapnel and shockwave will damage the plane enough to put it out of operation for months if not years.

More likely a T-38 repainted. The US sold them to Iran prior to the 1979 revolution.

Good point. Forgot that part of the earlier post.

Had to do some checking; looks like that is the F-5F variant. Which the US also sold to Iran. Very close in appearance.

Airforce lost the priority when the sides were switched. Question is, is it possible to counter USN's high tech jets in a short span of time? An other question, can Iran overcome its economic burden?

Its not Indian airforce, its USN's stealth platforms.

You merely need to be able to reliably defend your airspace via the air like in Iraq war with the F-14. Make it costly for enemy to operate so war isn’t even on the agenda. Deterrence via the air.

You cannot expect your air defense network to shoulder the ENTIRE burden against the might of USAF and not eventually be degraded and collapse, look at Ukraine War as Russian continue to pummel Ukraine from a far. And Russian airforce doesn’t even have 1/10th the stealth platforms that U.S. airforce does.

After series of chimpouts by Talibans at border in 2022. IRIAF is adding overhauled F-5E/F at Mashhad FAB and Birjand FAB nearby facing Afghanistan. 12+3 fighters along with mixed squadrons of UCAVs (Mohajer-6 and Shahed 129). Amusingly these fighters often have flown inside Afghan airspace and have on occasions broken sound barrier on Afghan cities.

Birjand FAB was supposed to be a large base to tackle USSR in Afghanistan, hosting multiple squadrons of IIAF F-16 (140 were on order). IRI lost interest in Birjand after fall of USSR and Afghan civil war. Only recently we are seeing some minor activity happening there.

Despite YAK-130 acquisition, I still see Kowsar production having a role like this, they are modern enough to secure the eastern borders as CAP+CAS while pilots can get AT on them.

Exactly. Light CAS with even PGM would be done perfectly by Kowsar. Deployed in meaningful numbers, with all logistics indegenously produced would be a 100% sovereignty, high readiness light fighter.
When you see the devious way of Su35 contract, you must avoid to put all the eggs in the same basket. Kowsar it is perfect for such role.
