If China resort to hostage diplomacy, which by now every corporate CEOs in America and Europe is worried on this early news, do YOU approve of such tactic?

I'm sorry to say it's no different from the US and EU seizing assets of other countries or companies or arresting individuals based on what suits their policies on a given day. It's disingenuous to point to someone else's closet if it has a skeleton or two when one's closet has dozens of such skeletons.

The Chinese supplier's not authorizing the transfer of equipment is no different from similar tactics employed by the US government to prevent suppliers from exporting to China.

The two world powers need to negotiate a way forward to reduce American trade deficit and bring stability to global economic outlook. Needs of people should be top priority. Maybe China can offer to open some manufacturing plants in the US.

The American trade deficit has been solely an American problem since the dollar became the global reserve currency, a decision they aggressively pursued. The US needed to consume and run a deficit to supply dollars to the world market. They ran into the Triffin dilemma in economics, a problem that countries of reserve currencies often face.

This could have been resolved during World War II if the powers had come to a different arrangement, a separate currency for global trade, which the Americans rejected. The British agreed to the convertibility of their current account, which the others later adopted to ease FX exchange in international trade, making the dollar an anchor currency. There is also a separate history behind all this, before the U.S. entered the European theater of conflict.

The other issue isn't just trade but the U.S.'s budget deficit during war and peacetime. It needs a holistically better-managed budget and waste cutting in various programs, including military cuts. In the long run, it can't sustain itself, though many in the government ascribe to the Ricardian Equivalence Theory that running a fiscal deficit doesn't matter, as you will increase future taxes to pay off the debt. This creates a problem, as budgeting will be politically motivated, leading to a further fiscal deficit.

As for China offering something to the U.S., I do not foresee it happening, as the U.S. has decided to enter a power play competition with China. It should have thought of this before it opened the can. If I were Chinese, I would let the U.S. continue spending in a further deficit. I will steal a quote from U.S. Ambassador Ryan Crocker and modify it: the Americans have the watches; the Chinese have the time. As Victor Gao, a Chinese analyst, said, China has been going through far worse; Chinese civilization was here 5,000 years ago and will be here 5,000 years from now. That shows you the Chinese mindset and how they are ingrained in handling situations of extreme difficulty.

I don't think many American workers will shed any tears should a corporate CEO get taken hostage in China.

What people do for views.

You know would it be that bad if a nuke war happens and we wink at our enemy with a list of cities they can take out and they give us a list of their cities to take out? I have a handful of US cities that if they were nuked the US would actually become a better place.

It's not like I'm the only one who has thought of this. I mean if China nuked LA, SF, Okland and Sacramento we'd likely send them a thank you letter.

What a spoiled woman.

Price increases are a fact of life in third world countries.

Today a bag of snacks costs 7, tomorrow it will be 9 and then 10.5.

And so on.

Anyway, I advise her to stockpile a lot of goods and food at home.

May is her last chance.

Tariff War | China's e-commerce exports to the US fell 65%. Yiwu toy merchants: Don't care about sales to the US

US President Donald Trump launched a tariff war, increasing tariffs on China to 145% and canceling the tariff exemption policy for small packages from China and Hong Kong, which has had a severe impact on Sino-US trade. In Yiwu, Zhejiang province, a toy trader said he no longer cared about sales to the US. "We don't care about the 20 to 30 percent (of buyers from the US)... We now sell most of our products to South America and the Middle East."

The Guardian reported that under the tariff war, Chinese government data showed that e-commerce shipment exports to the United States fell 65% from January to March, while exports to Europe rose 28%. The report mentioned that under Trump’s tariff policy, Chinese e-commerce companies such as Shein and Temu were greatly affected, and their exports to the United States dropped sharply.

In Yiwu, China's "small commodity capital", toy merchant Mr. Hu told the BBC about the impact of the tariff war on him. He said that since Trump launched a trade war against China during his first term in 2018, Yiwu has "learned a lesson", that "other countries also have money."

Mr. Hu said that about 20 to 30 percent of the business comes from American buyers, but "we don't care about that 20 to 30 percent... Most of our sales now go to South America and the Middle East. We are not short of money, we have money." The report said that local businessmen and exporters said that they have other options besides the United States. Thousands of buyers go to the local area to purchase every day, and buyers can be seen coming from Dubai, Africa, South America and other places.

Another businessman surnamed Lin said he had noticed the loss of American buyers in the past 10 years he has been in the toy industry. "A few days ago, the store next to us received an order from an American customer worth more than 1 million yuan. But due to tariffs, the store owner decided to cancel the order."

He said the consequence of the tariff war is that many American companies are protesting because most toys in the United States are supplied by China. "They definitely need China."

China's total toy exports in 2024 will reach US$34 billion, of which about US$10 billion will be sold to the United States.

I gave up a few years ago trying to explain to others the inflation that hitting us right now, and about to get worse.

No. Those equipment are Apple's, not China's. Apple, as owner, have the right to move its assets anywhere they want.
since when does Apple run its own productions? are you going senile?

Apple is a R&D and marketing only company.

*edit, last I checked, Apple hasnt owned a production line since 1992

Trump is unhappy with China because there's a massive trade deficit.

Trump wants to punish China.

The truth is, it's never China's fault.

Who is banning USA companies from exporting goods to China?

The same USA government that complains that China does not buy enough.
