Jakarta, May 2025 – In the Indonesia Steel Summit & Exhibition Indonesia (ISSEI) 2025 forum which took place on May 21-22, 2025, PT Pindad affirmed the importance of national steel development as the main key to supporting the independence of Indonesia’s defense industry. Through a presentation entitled “Baja Strong, Tangguh Defense, Indonesia Advanced”, PT Pindad raised the issue of industrial dependence of the main tool of weapons (alutsista) on high-quality steel imports, which is currently still very dominant, including high-spec steel such as 32CrMoV12.10 for military needs.

Director of Technology and Development of PT Pindad, Prima Kharisma I.Y., explained that the need for steel for the production of combat vehicles and heavy weapons in Indonesia is still dependent on imported materials. For example, combat vehicles such as Anoa pans, tiger tanks, and SS2 barrel guns require high-standard steel that cannot be fully produced domestically. “Right now we need about 4,000 tons of steel armor and 2,000 tons of structural steel each year, but the majority are still in data from abroad,” Prima said.

To reduce this dependency, since the beginning of 2025, PT Pindad has started a strategic collaboration with PT Krakatau Steel (Persero) Tbk and the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) in developing domestically produced defense steel. The initial phase focused on the development of light and medium combat vehicle armor plates, while the medium-term plan to 2031 included the construction of a military-specific gun barrel and steel-shelpit production facilities.

The move is expected to not only strengthen the independence of the defense industry, but also encourage the growth of the national steel industry ecosystem as a whole. Prima added, "If only 30-40 percent of the needs of combat vehicles and TNI munitions could be met by domestic products, the potential economic value reached Rp122 trillion in the next five years. It will also open up opportunities for the development of the upstream-downstream manufacturing sector, such as the production of metal molds, coatings, and precision metallurgical technologies.”

ISSEI 2025 is the largest annual forum that brings together steel industry players, governments, investors, and user sectors such as defense, maritime, and energy. With the theme “National Steel, Regional Competitiveness,” this forum is an important platform to discuss downstream strategies, investment, and green transformation in the face of global geopolitical challenges.

and R-NR (Karawang Plant #3). This iron-based TR machine has 2 types, namely 1TR and 2TR.

This engine is used for IMV (Innovative Multipurpose Vehicle) type cars such as the Fortuner and Innova.

In addition, the aluminum-based R-NR engine also has 2 types, namely 1NR and 2NR. This engine is used for sedans such as the Yaris, Vios & MAV (Multi Activity Vehicle) such as the Sienta. Both of these machines are produced not only for the domestic market but also exported to countries around the world.

PT PAL Indonesia Brings Advanced Marine Defense System Technology to Indo Defence 2024Jakarta (11/06) - PT PAL Indonesia (@PTPAL_INDONESIA) brought advanced technological innovations to the Indo Defence 2024 Expo & Forum, at JIExpo Kemayoran, Central Jakarta.

The innovations are in the form of Autonomous Submarines and Combat Management System (CMS) for warships. "This is PT PAL's latest development in building Indonesia's maritime defense strength," said PT PAL Indonesia Marketing Director, Wiyono Komodjojo.

Wiyono said the development of autonomous submarines was carried out independently by PT PAL, with a TKDN/local content value above 50 percent. Autonomous submarines, he continued, are a tactical solution in answering the needs of underwater defense systems.

"Saving logistical supplies and no need for extra support," said Wiyono, while emphasizing that autonomous submarines are combined with Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology.

Regarding the CMS, Wiyono said that the development of the combat management system for the warship was PT PAL's effort to strengthen the defense ecosystem. This, he added, is in line with the direction of the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, regarding the independence of the defense industry.

"We must reduce dependence on imports. Because if we import, there are many restrictions on access to usage protocols," said Wiyono, who also said that the development of the CMS was carried out with strategic partners. "This is purely a CMS produced by PT PAL," he said.

Both innovations received attention and appreciation from the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto. He also asked PT PAL to accelerate the development of autonomous submarines and CMS. "There must be acceleration," said the President to the Director of PT PAL Indonesia, Kaharuddin Djenod, while reviewing the booth of Indo Defense 2024 participants.

In addition to bringing technological innovation to the development of autonomous submarines and CMS, PT PAL also showcased other superior ship products, namely the Merah Putih Fregate, Landing Platform Dock (LPD), Multirole Support Ship (MRSS), Hospital Auxiliary Ship (BRS) / Hospital Ship, and Scorpene Submarine.

Indonesian shipbuilder PT PAL has unveiled a new naval combat management system (CMS) that it has been developing for the last three years.

The system, which will be formally named by the country's President Prabowo Subianto at a later date, was unveiled at the Indo Defence 2025 exhibition in Jakarta.

Speaking to Janes at the event, the general manager of PT PAL's SEWACO (sensor, weapon, and command) Division, Enjud Darojat, said the CMS was developed in-house by its engineers and software developers, in response to a suggestion issued by Prabowo.

“Unlike CMS systems developed by other Indonesian companies that have been done in collaboration with foreign contractors, the CMS built by PT PAL is developed fully in-house and we own the source code,” said Enjud in response to questions from Janes .

“As such we have full control over what the CMS can do now and in the future,” he said, adding that while PT PAL received help from external advisers for the development, the company maintains full ownership and control over
