When a missile is intercepted
mid-air by an AD system:
- It is usually shattered or broken into fragments.
- The interceptor either explodes near the missile (proximity fuse) or hits it directly (hit-to-kill).
- The result is debris falling to the ground including parts of the missile body and warhead.
When a missile hits its target:
- It delivers its full kinetic energy and warhead detonation at the target.
- The missile is completely destroyed, and the explosion causes damage to the target.
- Very little of the missile remains as a large piece.
