This is actually a wrong evidence to support the original theme on illegal Chinese border crossers. Most of those people aren't trying to escape from poverty but looking for greener pasture. It is a way of life consciously chosen, not by necessity.

Wouldn't it be easier to take a HSR trip to a different part of China to find some "greener pasture" than do some long trek through a Central American jungle.

I wasn't interested in knowing how they had made the long journey to their destination, and I saw that the descendants of the smugglers in the land were driving out the latecomers, and it was ironic that it wasn't the indigenous people who started the movement.

It is always amazing how the Chinese will find whatever angle is possible (eg the entire Western Hemisphere is illegal) to show they are not in the wrong...no matter how ridiculous it is.

The population of the Americas, including both North and South America, is estimated to be around 1.03 billion people.

Not necessarily. People tend to do what they are familiar with. In a region where people have a long history of "sneak"ing into US, doing cash-only (so, tax free) labor works and send their income back home, such a habit is hard to change.
