IMO, Iran did not intend on developing the bomb capability but wanted to have the capacity to do so. However, given what the Israel and the US have done, they have shifted Iran's existential threat to whole new level and Iran might now be convinced to develop nukes. In essence, Israel-US action may have paradoxical outcome, a nuclear Iran. Of course, this all depends on if Iran has 90% enriched U-235 or is able to somehow enrich that 60% enriched uranium to 90%.

The thing is that most scientists are dead

IMO, Iran has been on the quest to develop the capability all along, but has struggled with the technical challenges and acquisition of key components. Whereas, Pakistan had China's tech support they also established an extensive smuggling network to get key components and know-how out of the West back in the 70's and 80's when surveillance and scrutiny wasn't as robust as it is post 9/11. As such Iran has struggled in put together the actual device.

This ain't the 60s that it takes decades to come up capability or capacity to build WMDs.

Persians are not interested in anything but peaceful nuclear capacity. A binding religious authority has sealed the debate long ago. No country has worked so tirelessly and with utter honesty with the IAEA than Iran.

Long before Pakistanis tried and failed to sell them the bomb, Americans tried and failed too. They just don't want it, you people spend too much time with the Indians to not understand No means No.
