Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus | News & Updates

Both sides have the right on their side of the border to drill, build, destroy, explore, whatever they feel is good for the local population.............. its a two state solution to end the conflict.

If its oil and gas, it should be distributed underground. So both sides can tap into it from their sides and get it. No need for further conflict.

Whether Syria or any other independent country wants to establish a partnership in their EEZ with Turkey, it's up to two nations. Not EU or Greece or anyone else. It's that simple.
That's the problem though. The Turks wouldn't let the Greek Cypriots drill on their own side, partly claiming it for themselves and partly saying they should share the wealth with the Turkish Cypriots, because it's "one island".

It's a beautiful island, lots of history, I've visited both the North and South, it's a shame it's divided and two communities can't live together and jointly share the rule of the island.

Well if they aren't drilling on their sides, then perhaps a sharing formula can be setup. Otherwise you can tell him to go drill their own oil. Either way should work.

These are the Greek Cypriot fields, were they tried to have Exonmobil,Eni and others to drill. Specifically they tried to drill at number 10,11,12,8...you know, the south ones. And Turkey intervened and started threatening.

Meanwhile,Turkey claims all this:

Notice how TRT says "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" and "Greek Cypriot Administration",instead of "Republic of Cyprus". The irony is that TRNC is the unrecognized State(by everyone except Turkey)and the Republic of Cyprus is not only an internationally recognized State, but also a EU member.

Right, but Turkey is also an EU member...... the issue is Greece says "this is all us" and Turkey says "No, all is us". Why don't you create a power or resource sharing formula and use the UN platform for an agreement and settlement?

No,Turkey is not a EU member, they are a NATO member. There is the International Law of the Seas, which Turkey does not abide to.

There is the International Law of the Seas

No such thing. What greece subscribes to isn't universal, its only a supplementary element added on top via a treaty in the 90s and only binding on those who signed the treaty.

About as "International law" as a ban on landmine usage. lol

I'd say it's pretty darn international

The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), also called the Law of the Sea Convention or the Law of the Sea Treaty, is an international treaty that establishes a legal framework for all marine and maritime activities. As of October 2024, 169 sovereign states and the European Union are parties, including all major powers except the United States.

The convention resulted from the third United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS III), which took place between 1973 and 1982. UNCLOS replaced the four treaties of the 1958 Convention on the High Seas. UNCLOS came into force in 1994, a year after Guyana became the 60th nation to ratify the treaty. In 2023, agreement was reached on a High Seas Treaty to be added as an instrument of the convention, to protect ocean life in international waters. This would provide measures including Marine Protected Areas and environmental impact assessments.

Means nothing for people who haven't signed the treaty. Its not binding unless you sign. Which many if not most in the Eastern Mediterranean have not signed and ratified.

Turkey, Syria, Yahood, and Libya. Egypt is the only one you have outside of that(and its only b/c of Sisi and his previous beef), its all greeks. This treaty is meaningless to Turkey. Even Italy and Greece despite both signing, when they demarcated, Greece did not do it based on the logic of Seville map, they gave things up in a superseding Bilateral agreement. Turkey is not going to sign anything, it will reach consensus with all the parties in the region bilaterally. Anyways we are just rehashing old discussions, We have both had this discussion multiple times, no point.

You have Lebanon,Cyprus,Egypt,Greece and Libya is a signatory. Israel settled it according to UNCLOS. The only one who has had problems about it,is Turkey. Which ironically, settled it more or less according to UNCLOS in the Black Sea back in the Cold War.

Libya has not ratified, and it doesn't look like it going to.

The expansion of the EEZ part came in the 90s.
