Turkish Defence Minister Hulusi Akar, who immediately before his appointment was Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, indicated that nothing can obstruct Turkey from pursuing its aims,

«The activity for the protection of our rights and interests in the Aegean, Eastern Mediterranean, and Cyprus is proceeding decisively,» the Turkish defence minister said.

«The easiest thing that can be done is to divide in a just manner and in accord with the law all types of resources and wealth that exist in the Aegean, Eastern Mediterranean, and Cyprus,» Turkey’s state-run news agency Anadolu quoted Akar as saying.

Now,they have a new thing: They claim it doesn't matter that Cyprus is in the middle,they can have normal EEZ with Syria and Lebanon.

@Foinikas While some may want a romantic vision of a United Federated Cyprus, we know that it is not going to happen.

May as well divide Cyprus up along the current demarcation lines and then in terms of resources, it goes to whoever's new international waters the resource falls under.

If Northern Cyprus then wants to become part of Turkey that is fine. South can join Greece if it want to as well.

Incidentally I used to work with a Greek Cypriot and he told me about his family that had to leave the north of the Island after Turkey invaded.

It is very sad but we need to move on as the current situation is holding both parts back. Better to accept the reality and then the two parts can build mutually beneficial relations as two permanently separated entities.

Ok let's say they split the island. Turkey's demand that the Greek Cypriots have to either share their profits from gas and oil in their area or Turkey will start a war,is ridiculous.

No, if Turkey does not accept reunification of Cyprus with a central government but still a federal structure of some sort between the two parts, "North Cyprus" should have no claims to those areas mentioned.

I know there are two sides to this story but that is just greedy and unreasonable.

Well they put a lot of pressure during 2019-2022 to stop the Greek Cypriots from drilling and exploring on their own side. Then,they wanted half the Aegean. Akar used to repeat "Let's share the wealth of the region".

Turkey has the largest coastline of any state in the medeterranians, but look how much the Greeks claim.

Foinikas who doesn't know international law will come claim that it all rightfully belongs to Greece, when infact the irony is that if that were true, why did Greece not use the same mechanism of the Seville Map in making claims against Italy, where they agreed to not make maximalist claims.

They try to make Maximalist claims and think their EU Daddies and Bob Menendez will come and enforce. Its a very bad assumption by them. lol

You are conflating two distinct matters.

The boundaries of Türkiye’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) with South Cyprus are an independent issue and are not directly tied to the ongoing conflict between Turks and Greeks on the island.

Reaching an agreement regarding the island does not necessarily imply that Ankara will abandon all of its claims.
