India - US Tariff and Relations | News + Updates

When Modi, proudly raised the slogan, "Ab ki bar trump sarkar" what was he rooting for, the presidency or the one man circus?

Regardless of what it is, you guys have to face the music for your arrogant duplicity.
Protecting a country's sovereignty is different from building good diplomatic relationships. India manages to do both at the same time — and there's nothing wrong with that. In fact, very few countries in the world today are able to take such a balanced and independent stand.

True,

Everybody saw that how painful & lengthy, Brexit negotiations was and till now they are feeling its aftershocks. But still relation between Britain & EU have grown stronger since then rather than decalin.

Likewise relation between US & India will grow stronger as the time progresses as both know reasons for need of each other.

DT is just using his power and business tactics to put more pressure on India so that he can convince GoI and get better deal out of it.

I am sure that things will be worked out shortly as both nations know that at present world both can't neglect each other and Its all about how you will negotiate, convince other party.

Finally everyone should understand that both parties sitting across the table are there to put their nations interests first rather than for petty politics.
This is what people in Pakistan need to understand.

India is a huge market and DJT want not only free access to it but also manipulation in favor of USA.

Like it is said it's just Business nothing personal

That's not accurate. Trump is a businessman, it would be dumb of him to want "free access" to America. He's asking for is, make it even or close to even for US to participate in Indian economy too.

India blocks others access to it's economy, when it took trillions of dollars to fight China AND to give the West access to it's massive economy. Both issues it doesn't do.

India has too much tariff for foreign governments, and also, no foreigner can start a business in India, unless it's essentially Indian based, while Indians can and hold a LOT of business in the US and UK. So these are the true issues Trump has.

It's what I have been trying to explain to our Pakistani brethren, but many have developed shit for brains. @kmc_chacko has said it as simply as possible without being technical.

All Trump wants is access to two main sectors in India, which are well protected and for good reason. It's not any different than Canada protecting theirs.

This whole fight with China is also getting out of hand, as India has never stated its intention from the beginning to become physical; several months ago, Trump asked other QUAD members, and they had a muted response if they would come and fight China.

Those saying India took money from the West and the U.S.; the answer is, no, India offered a service, the others paid for it, the West had other options, it chose what was economical for it, it never came with strings attached.

We have two issues:
1) Your promise the West on China and Russia, you won't act on it. That's fine.

2) You told the West and gave them a loli pop of "massive Indian economy as a market", "largest Indian market for you", YET, your laws block the foreigners out while you established your economy with their money?

They can't own a business in India directly, they can't send full profits out and the tariff's are too much that they can't bring their products to India to be on equal footing to begin with. What's wrong in asking for a similar access and tariffs so BOTH countries can benefit? That's all Trump is saying......

Even with this little chart of "we can't compete" you posted, we are still near $1.4 billion in PROFIT! So that's the key, we need to be in PROFIT. Whether dollar goes to 500 or electricity goes to 10000 as example. So when we are in PROFIT, we now need to think, how to GROW our trade with the US. Not throw a list of things to always talk negative about our country on some other agenda.

And if you don't know how trade works, may be do some education to learn the topic first? Stop throwing mud on Pakistan that also on an Indian related thread. The discussion here is the mess that India is in and you are making it about Pakistan. How smart?

There is another thread that none of you PHD in economics want to participate in because you know over there you can't donkey honk the wagon. Look for Pakistan US trade in the threads. If you have any ideas about Pakistan's trade, let's post there.

@PakFactor

Very lucid analysis, sir, as always.

One small point though. With effective solarisation of Pak industry, the effective energy costs would be much lower.

Regards

What @Vkdindian1 said is correct; this gross-metering and poor infrastructure haven't worked out in Pakistan's favor, and consumers are bearing the brunt of it to cover the financial gaps.

Bro,

1. India never promised anyone to give-up on its nation Interest over US and whatever conflicts might be there between India & China its bilateral and both nations have clarified that no Tom, Dick & Harry has the roll in it.

2. MEA has repeatedly reminded US about special relation India has with Russia and giving up it for the sake of few $$ is not Indian foreign policy. Further, w.r.t Ukraine, Israel to kill thousands and US is just supporting them for just sake of long-term relations, so US has no moral right to dictate others in this regard and India is buying few barrels crude oil at cheaper $$ from Russia to protect interest of its citizens.

and finally we have made it clear to US that we are not client state or allies, we are partners, who welcome co-operation on different fields with mutual understanding & respect and if anyone forget it then doesn't need to expect it from us also.

Your country is BUILT based on American money majority and Western money, minority. The internal conditions inside India until 1995 were terrible. You can write these feel good statements for fools who can buy them.

You were still running Maruti's with 1960's round lights as VIP vehicles, until Clinton-Wajpaye struck this "strategic partnership" to bring India's middle class and US businesses would benefit from it also. Today, you aren't allowing the US or Western business to be equally beneficial from Indian market like you have been benefiting from Western markets. Nor did you stand up to China, or acted on Russian oil that's financing killings of thousands of people weekly.

You can make 1000 excuses and reasons, but you can't hide the truth.

What value does India even have to offer?

Most of the western world is beginning to grow extremely weary of Indian labour and anything that involves immigrants at all. There is a massive movement brewing against H1B and Indian immigration.

There's a huge chance that Indian services & IT take a hit with the rise of AI. China already covers physical goods and others can also take some of that share.

India is just a massively overinflated country with no value. Its domestic market access to sell things is a strong leverage I guess but that demands removal of protectionist measures.

just like China had in 2000s - market of 140 billion people & skilled labours

What $1.4 billion profit are you talking about?

What other thread? I only know of the General Economics thread @Fatman17 often posts in. Lastly, I'm well-versed in economics, as it was my field of study in the U.S.; the last one I need anyone to lecture me on is mainland Pakistanis.

My friend, you are mudding the waters here. Let me try and simplify it for you. What you are proposing is effectively selling your sovereignty for business to the US. If you read the posts on this thread, including those by many knowledgeable Pakistanis, you would see the bigger picture. The US and the current administration is self serving. If India refuses to bow to its demands then it's no shame on India that Trump is throwing a hissy fit. India is not the only country refusing to bow to Trump. China and my country are amongst others who accepted the tariff raise since the conditions for reduction are unacceptable. If Trump and the US wants to act like a bully then so be it. The US has done nobody any favours. It is and always will be self serving

Your country and it's situation has no relation with India and West issue. First educate yourself. If you are an Indian, change flags and then talk.
