A decades-old spat over alleged Hindi imposition in the southern state of Tamil Nadu has erupted again. Here’s why.

I lack specific knowledge about the current linguistic situation in India; however, could this dispute be an early indication of a burgeoning Indian middle class with increased educational attainment that is becoming more attuned to identity and language matters? I believe that a conflict of this nature would not have arisen 30 years ago, as people's priorities were quite different.
 
DW traveled to India's Bastar region of Chhattisgarh state and witnessed efforts by right-wing nationalist Hindus to push Christians to convert to Hinduism.

In rural India, Hindu nationalist groups are pressuring Christian converts — many from the marginalized Adivasi community — to return to Hinduism.

DW follows BJP local leader Raja Ram Todem as he confronts a Christian who converted after receiving medical help from missionaries. The man is then subjected to a forced "reconversion" ceremony, part of a broader campaign targeting religious minorities.

The crackdown includes denying burial rights to Christians, as seen in the case of another man, whose father was buried far from his ancestral land. Local pastors warn that rising sectarian tensions are eroding religious freedom and fueling fear among Christian communities.

Had Pakistan not been created, this would have been our fate too.
 
This looks like an organised government funded scheme to fiddle with demographics in archaic colonial administrative institutions of India.

There was a time perhaps it still is when indian so called "Muslims" were more anti-Pakistani then even the indian hindus/sikhs are. They used to claim that Pakistan was a "mistake". They are no longer calling Pakistan a "mistake". Jinnah (PBUH) predicted ALL of this more than 78 years ago.

Not much a big producer im afraid....not for long time. Last I remember potential new find of scale was back in early 2000s somewhere in interior India, but it panned out to nothing in end.

Aussies and (South) Africa got much larger windfall from the gondwanaland distribution (combined with much lesser population history/density compared to peninsular India)...shucks....though maybe this find might alter that a bit.

My dad actually did a tour of kolar gold field back in 70s it must have been (neck of woods near where he doing his masters), production was getting severely depleted back then already (but he was amazed at how the gold looked like fresh at the end).

India does import a lot and value addition export as jewellery (combined with diamonds, precious stones etc) though for sure.
 
I believe linguistic differences always have been simmering, or under the surface.

After all you must remember that every regions cultural and historical legacy was based on the language of the region, Punjab for punjabi's, Tamil etc

I I feel that as religious identities sharpen, then so will the other identity of your heritage rise with it, and the connections to the regional language are deeper than the connections to Hindi....


I think an Indian poster himself posted how certain right wing Indian ideologies are clashing themselves, on who is truest.

Of course then you have ethic differences, stereotypes of the other, skin colour

Bang on target!

But as you can see inspite of not being endowed with as much gold as Saf and Oz, we were never short on gold. The moral of the story is simple - invest in your people and they will earn all the gold that they (and their nation) wants.

PS: We are more likely to find a hair on Professor sb's head than gold in Jabalpur. Just my (prejudiced) opinion.
 
Dozens of ethnicities and languages go extinct in India each year.
