To me, it looks like Navarro was one of those who incorrectly advised Trump how India would react and Trump had already fired all the State Department India experts who could have told him that trying to bully India would be counter- productive . It is clear he has absolutely no understanding of India or geopolitics. On a purely economic basis, it made sense for India to choose lower tariffs over buying Russian oil on which the discount is shrinking, but these people don't understand that international relations are not like real estate deals where the only thing that matters is money. Trump and his people are so transactional that they would not have conceived that India would prioritise long term interest over making a few bucks by ditching its long term strategic ally.

Ron Vara exists only inside Navarro's head, but Trump has been known to turn to turn on henchmen who fail him. Navarro going on about Modi being a great leader , India being a democracy , and him not understanding why India is not acting as he expected shows that he might be getting heat from within the Administration . Forget about this being a strategic mistake, this is also a big tactical blunder where the US has blown its leverage in its ongoing negotiations with each of China, Russia and India. US provide them security. They are literally vassal state. If US-India relations dont improve then EU will come under pressure and do as USA say.

Trump have left out services, pharma, electronics. All this combined make up 80% of exports. Its early days, depend on where things go. Thats why India isnt retaliating and will quitely accept 50% tariff on some goods.

Use India to fight the trade war with an attack on the dollar empire and it is a win win for China and India. If China does nothing, expect India to eventually cave and you have a worse scenario to deal with.
