I vaguely recall General Tariq Khan, who has great knowledge of Pakistan-Afghanistan, once saying that Pakistan's security analyses had concluded that there is no difference between the Afghan and the Pakistan Taliban.

Yes, there was a certain group in GHQ, those who had seen combat who believed in this. Bajwa and co. were a cruse for that internal thinking within the Army.

Actually no. Imran Khan has been proven wrong about almost all the things in War on Terror.
He opposed Op Raah-e-Raast in Swat. The op was a success, Swat is in peace for last 16 years.

You spoke facts--not fantasies paddled by an opportunist cricketer turned politician!
The people of Swat and the people of Pakistan can't thank the State of Pakistan enough for their hard work and sacrifices in reversing Swat becoming another Qandahar of year 2000!

So, that TTP was different and now TTP supported by Afghan Taliban are some other people?

When TTP was blowing up our AWACS, Anas Haqqani used to pray beside Hakimullah Mehsud in North Waziristan. I can find you a picture from that video if you want me to verify this claim. They are always the one!

TTP are terrorists, Fitna, they will and can switch sides. All am saying is their all terror attacks had NDS/RAW foot print. Every attack was designed to hit targets which india would want to go. Even attack on Srilankan team, took away all cricket away from Pakistan and transferred to india. AWACS, PC3s, Karachi airport and so on... It was All RAW funded terrorism executed by TTP when previous Aghan govt was in power. RAW was established firmly in afghan soil.

Now atleast that indian angle is closed after Taliban took over. But yes Taliban themselves have come with their own set of problems. All am saying is we cannot replace Taliban with better option as of now. Remember we were able to live peacefully once with them during Taliban 1.0 in the 1990s. There was zero military presence in our western border and yet no terrorism. We need to find a way to reach that level again.

80,000 innocent Pakistanis who were killed during the war can also thank the State of Pakistan for joining US war on terror in the first place in 2001!

@Meengla

Clarification, going on Gen. Tariq Khan’s analysis that there is no deference between the Afghan Talibs and the TTP, is that we have to deal with the Afghan Talibs when they are now at their weakest, a global pariah, who have even alienated the Chinese. We have to go effectively deal with the source of the problem and not ignore the problem or think force alone will do the work.

We need to change their culture when Pakistani Pashtuns make up a population nearly double the population of Afghan Pashtuns (50:25 million), which in a generation maybe even sized, probably at 65:65 million.

Remember the old Cold War adage about us troops in Germany; keep the Americans in, Russians out (in our case the Indians and any other disruptive foreign powers) and Germans down. German and Japanese culture were reshaped with economic incentives, and so must Afghan culture, a unified Pashtun leader most Pashtuns would accept agreeing to terms with.

As a one term PM, he could leave the political helm, and focus on building a non-nepotistic PTI, should God grant him the time to do so.

P.S. If we can solve this “frozen conflict” it will also create a template for solve our other frozen internal conflicts. Finding a way to politically and peacefully bring dissents into the fold. Conflicts for resources amongst different ethnic groups or parts of provinces, water resources and how tax revenue is spent. Progress on our internal and external frozen conflicts will build trust and attract FDI. Remember Chinese investors want to see stability before they will invest big. A major goal and milestone for an IK government will have to be terms to build and secure a Trans-Afghan railway with no post construction funny business. We need to have contract law solid in Afghan culture and our own culture for that matter.

Dealing with the TTP, has to be done like cancer, go to the source, cut off the blood supply (funding/support) allowing the cancer to keep growing or even just existing.

We have to like IK to know he can be useful for our national interests on the one border we can possible leverage our size upon.

Ttp fan boys forget that Pak has in the past tried multiple times talks with these people. And every time it has been proven that they would not stop untill you give whole country to them.
Any body who lives in the illusion of "our own people" is more than welcome to go and happily live among them.

You won’t find any TTP fan boy here because it’s already a very fringe group, even in areas where it operates.

Who created the Taliban?
Interior Minister of Benazir Bhutto. He was a army General Naseeruddin babar. Taliban was created to do the country’s dirty work in Afghanistan. Their handlers were all serving or retired ISI officers. And just like the other militant groups they are now out of our control and they are now the enemy.
Who are the TTP?
the same Taliban driven out by the Americans and the Northern Alliance into the FATA badlands where they mixed with the locals through marriage etc and morphed into the TTP.
All the military operations were against them and they were driven back across the border and find sanctuary and are supported by the Taliban regime because they are one and the same.
Every civilian government has signed peace deals with both groups.
So why blame IK only because he overtly comments (rightly or wrongly) about them.
Military operations provide temporary space for the civilian government to be able to Rehabilitate and Reconstruct (R&R) the FATA and every single government has failed in that regard and looked towards the military to do their job.
With the help of UAE the army did the R&R but it was not enough.
The army returned to the barracks and the TTP returned and this vicious cycle continues today.
One step forward and two back.
And that is why IK continues to say that the military operations are not working.
You have got to let the local Jirga system sort their problems. They have been doing it for centuries.

How did the "we want the land, not the people " argument of the military work out in East Pakistan ? Then people wonder why the Pashtun and Baloch youth join militant groups. Before holding India responsible , ask yourself why RAW can't start insurgencies in Punjab and Sindh where it would be much easier to provide logistical support.

They blame only Imran Khan because he is a soft target, even when he is right. And also because he is brave enough to speak his mind about all pressing issues, even from a dark prison cell.

That’s exactly what Imran Khan has been saying for the last 20 years, but he has been labeled 'Taliban Khan' by the military (and its fan boys) in their Bughaz-e-Imran. 🙄

But no solution on how to deal with terrorists, extremists and how to stop suicide bombings and killing of soldiers. @Meengla said. The militants want control of tribal areas, possibly swat and malakhan region, they don't want army or government writh in these regions. Will that be acceptable to PTI, military and people of Pakistan.

This is why I mentioned we must negotiate with the militants, to know exactly what they want, get the tribes involved, if so isolate the trouble makers and terrorists, get all political parties on board and then terrorists must be finished off. Afterwards security must be top notch backed by development and education.

yeah lets just forget they slaughtered 100+ school kids in 2014 and act all lovey dovey with cavemen who only know fighting
