Respectfully I disagree. Despite Afghanistan being much weaker in every way...We can do it ourselves , in the present geopolitical environment criticism and opposition level won't exceed our tolerance threshold.
...Pakistan CANNOT invade, occupy, and annex it.
Various factors are involved...like international pressure, possible sanctions, Indian threat on the eastern border while Pakistan is busy at the western border...
...and most importantly all of Afghanistan's different factions banding together to resist...causing a widespread militancy.
I don't think Pakistan has the economic capacity to sustain a huge separatist movement...while trying to invade and hold a large chunk of territory...it will constantly be a drain on resources...and backing out once started would be an embarrassment and make u look weak ...all the while India will use that to keep pressure on the eastern border. Imagine the results on Pak's already fragile economy.
US clout, firepower, and money...
...along with that window of opportunity was needed to have the slightest chance of making that happen and that ship has sailed.
