Indonesia Qualifies for U-17 World Cup -- Its First Through Competitive Qualifying​

Jakarta. Indonesia’s U-17 national football team has made history by securing a place in the 2025 FIFA U-17 World Cup, following a commanding 4-1 victory over Yemen in the AFC U-17 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia on Monday evening.


This marks the first time Indonesia has qualified for the U-17 World Cup through the competitive process, making it a significant milestone for the country's football development. The team’s previous appearance in the U-17 World Cup was as the host in 2023.


Indonesia’s qualification sends a strong message about the country’s growing presence on the global football stage and brings renewed hope to fans eager to see the Garuda Muda soar against the world’s best.


“Indonesia’s U-17 victory over Yemen has earned us a spot in the quarterfinals of the AFC Asian Cup and, more importantly, a ticket to the U-17 World Cup in Qatar. Congratulations!” said Erick Thohir, Chairman of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI), in an official statement.

“But remember, the battle is not over yet. Our players and coaching staff must remain focused on the ongoing tournament to achieve the best possible results,” he added.


Road to Qatar
The 2025 FIFA U-17 World Cup will take place in Qatar from November 3 to 27, featuring 48 teams from around the world. As of Monday evening, 24 teams have secured qualification, with more to come in the weeks ahead.

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia --

Indonesia is officially appointed by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) to host the FIB A Basketball World Cup for two age categories.

First FIBA appointed Indonesia to host the FIBA Under-17 2028 Women's Basketball World Cup and second is to host the FIBA U-19 2029 Basketball World Cup.

The determination of the host status was carried out by FIBA after the FIBA Ingo Weiss Treasurer and FIBA Chief Operating Officer (COO) Patrick Mariller came to Jakarta this week.

During the visit, Ingo and Patrick had a meeting with a number of key stakeholders in Indonesian basketball sports at FIBA Indonesia.

Present at the meeting was Chairman of DPP Perbasi Budisatrio Djiwandono, Menpora Dito Ariotedjo, FIBA Central Council Member Erick Thohir, and Secretary General of KOI Wijaya Noeradi.

"We announce that the Basketball World Cup will come back to Indonesia. Basketball World Cup is young. It's certainly going to be an amazing moment," Ingo said.

Previously, Indonesia had hosted the 2023 Basketball World Cup. At that time Indonesia succeeded in becoming the co-host of FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 with Japan and the Philippines.

Budi Djiwandono assessed that FIBA’s confidence will have a long-term impact on the development of basketball in the country, especially for the coaching level.

Moreover, in addition to hosting the two age category World Cups, Indonesia will also hold FIBA U-16 Women's Asia Cup 2027 and FIBA U-18 Asia Cup 2028.

"This certainly adds to the spirit for us in Perbasi to prepare ourselves, prepare infrastructure and also human resources," said Budi reported from the official Perbasi website.

"Looking for the talents of young athletes so that later they can compete as well as possible in international events and competitions," said the man with the background of the businessman.

Menpora guarantees the government will fully support the holding of the world championship. According to Dito this is in harmony with the vision of the government in advancing the sport of industry.

"We will ensure that facilities, infrastructure, and human resources are ready to support the implementation of this world-class event," Dito said in a release received by CNNIndonesia.com.

SEREMBAN (Malaysia) - Indonesia salvaged a third-place finish in Division B of the FIBA U16 Women's Asia Cup 2025 following a dominant 51-30 victory over Hong Kong, China at the Karisma Arena, Friday.

The young Timnas found their flow in the middle quarters, pouring 39 points while limiting their East Asian counterparts to only 12 to establish a commanding 46-19 lead entering the game's final 10 minutes.

Never would they be challenged since, as the crew from Southeast Asia went on to secure a breakthrough podium finish - and earn themselves a consolation of sorts after getting foiled by India in the Semi-Finals.

This is now the program's best finish in this contest to date.

Nine of Coach Marlina Herawan's players scored at least a point in the triumph, with Hannah Harshita just a point shy of registering a double-double performance as she finished with 9 points and 12 rebounds.

Ayu Krisabella and Racquell Hendyawan scored 9 points apiece as well, with Inez Welly and Kayla Adiutomo chipping in 7 and 6 points, respectively, for Team Indonesia, who hauled down a total of 61 rebounds.

Not only did they clinch a top-three finish but the Indonesians gained a measure of payback as well against the very same team that beat them in opening day last Saturday by way of a 74-71 decision.

I am happy that if KSA fails to qualify for the World Cup it will either be Indonesia or Iraq that will take the place.

I don't know what to expect. KSA has had a weak qualifiers campaign and I would not be surprised if Indonesia either wins or draws even though the game is being played in Jeddah. We have some important players missing out due to injury as well.

Also we have a very young team. Only 3 players over 30 years old with the oldest (34) being the "star" of the team on paper (Salem Al-Dawsari). No goalkeepers or defenders over 30.

Indonesia has improved a lot and naturalized many players from Europe of Indonesian origins and others too.

I think that it will be a close game. May the best team win. @Indos

Yup pretty much we get lot of Dutch with have linked to Indonesia. When Dutch colonize Indonesia, they basically make huge colony here. If you see for example old Jakarta before WW2, it is more like Europian city with many white people there.

Soekarno prefer to kick many of them, some went back to Europe, but many end up in Australia. US is likely the other place where Dutch Indonesian reside.

There are some that dont leave and this is why some Indonesians have European blood as well, like for example my neighboor.

Yes, I believe that the other group is weaker on paper as well but Qatar has won the last two editions of the Asian Cup.

But it is incredible the amount of players born in the Netherlands. Some of the players looked completely Dutch to me.

I took a look at the Indonesian squad and 15 out of 23 players were born in the Netherlands with one in Finland.

Anyway a close game as expected but I believe that KSA deserved the win. I thought that the Kuwaiti referee (he has an unfortunate history against KSA teams in the AFC Champions League as well) was very harsh against KSA. The sending off was strange too and Kanno is a very important miss against Iraq for us.

Don't understand why so many Malaysians are anti-Indonesia in the comments. The internet is often a strange place.

Everything is still open. KSA conceding the second penalty goal late in the game could be costly in terms of qualification if Iraq wins against Indonesia by a difference of 2 or more goals in case we draw against them.

By the way there were tons of Indonesian fans in the stadium (Jeddah). They were very loud too. Not a surprise given the large Saudi-Indonesian and Indonesian expat community in Jeddah and Hejaz.

Anyway good luck to Indonesia against Iraq.

The Indonesian U-17 Women’s 3x3 Team made history by winning the SEABA 3x3 U-17 Championship in Singapore on September 27–28. This achievement has certainly made Indonesia’s basketball community proud.


One person who probably feels even prouder than the rest of us is Romy Christanto Chandra. And for good reason — two members of the Indonesian U-17 team are his twin daughters, Kayla Rara Imani and Kamila Rara Islami. The other two players are Joanne Giovanni and Ni Kadek Winda Sandia Kanita (from Merpati Bali).

Romy, affectionately known as Gepeng, also has a twin son, Kareem, who is likewise involved in basketball.


Gepeng expressed his pride that his children have achieved success in basketball, even though, at first, he had to give them a little push to start training.


“It’s exciting, emotional. Having kids who initially didn’t want to play basketball but ended up becoming champions — that’s a huge bonus for me personally,” he once said.

Kayla, Kamila, and Kareem are all trained directly by Romy at the Warriors Basketball Club and Academy, which he founded.


“At first, the kids weren’t very interested in basketball, but I encouraged them to get to know the sport. Based on my own experience, basketball teaches a lot — discipline, communication, and character development. Beyond that, any achievements are just a bonus for me,” Romy explained.

After retiring from professional basketball and becoming a star with clubs like IM Texmaco, Aspac, and Pelita Jaya, Romy co-founded the Warriors Basketball Academy with his long-time teammate Ali Budimansyah.


Together with his colleagues, he aims to provide a solid basketball foundation for young players who want to pursue the sport seriously.


Gepeng’s playing career was long and successful. He represented the Indonesian national team, winning a bronze medal at the 1993 SEA Games in Singapore, another bronze in Brunei in 1999, and a silver medal at the 2001 SEA Games in Malaysia. With this list of achievements, Romy Chandra rightfully stands as one of Indonesia’s basketball legends.


Interestingly, basketball wasn’t Gepeng’s first sport. He initially took badminton more seriously and even joined a club.


He only began playing basketball in high school.


“My seniors invited and trained me to play basketball. Eventually, I got hooked and became serious about it,” he recalled.

Through talent and hard work, Gepeng went on to shine in the Indonesian basketball scene.


Today, Romy has passed down his passion and skills to his children — and beyond that, he continues to nurture the next generation of young basketball players through his academy, Warriors.


We hope his children and students will continue to shine and contribute to the growth of Indonesian basketball.
