I am of the opinion that was has happened is a strategic failure and while we are the dominant force and can impose significant costs on the Taliban, we should do it reasonably. The fact is that there is no way we can hold and control portions of Afghanistan as we have seen from past powers trying to subdue them and I dont think this is the reasonable approach. Instead, we have far better and longer term controls that we can easily apply.
First of all, this fight is going to stop as it shows a failure of diplomacy. The Taliban are getting a taste of real politik and they will have to make a clear decision of whether they want Pakistan as an enemy or as an ally. Befriending India means that Pakistan can start supporting other groups that are anti Taliban as it has done so in the 1990s and we saw a prolonged civil war. There is no more US and other power that will come to Afghanistan's aid even India can not no matter how much it may wish to do so as Pakistan now has a free hand to hit such targets. Before, Pakistan had to deal with the US and NATO.
However, lets just try to treat this as a fight between two brothers and come towards reconciliation. I believe that if the Taliban want to behave the way they do then impose on them other costs. These could be but not limited to:
1. Revoke all nationalities to the Taliban members and their families or bar them entry into Pakistan.
2. Impose taxes on them for the use of Pakistani infrastructure.
3. Impose additional taxes and economic burdens when trading with Pakistan.
4. Do not forward their global politics and do not help them get recognised.
5. Do not let their population gain access to Pakistani facilities.
On other hand make them offers as well i.e. reign in the TTP and other anti-Pakistan entities and improvements on the above.
At the end, they want to be treated like a nation and so we should do so.
